What have you done to prep today PART 3? (Page 23 of 24)

As a gift, my wife purchased a vacuum sealer. It is a 30$ Chinese model. It works well enough - I've been experimenting with mylar and regular plastic bags. The cheap heat strip is blistering the plastic in a few places even on low. Makes me want to purchase a chamber vac and go scorched earth! After 15 years in this house, we've spotted rice bugs and they have made their way into flour, pasta and most everything edible to them. So far I've sealed up 1 large box/bag of walmart honey nut cheerios in plastic(experiment) 25lbs of bread flour in plastic (after freezing for 3 days) 30 ramen packets of noodles in plastic (experiment) 1 bag of walnuts in mylar(with o2 absorber) 2 bags of pecans in mylar(with o2absorber) 25lbs of parboiled rice in mylar 1 pack of lighters in plastic (some say bics last for ever but I've seen otherwise) 30lbs of old fashioned oats in mylar(o2absorber) 4lbs of spaghetti in plastic Most of these are not for long term storage - 3-5 years. I would go mylar and O2 all the way if that was the case. I'm a bit tapped out on space with buckets and such - I think moving forward I'll see it as part of my grocery rotation. I'm really curious of mylar and O2 can extend the life of nuts. I've always been reluctant to store them. |

Not sure it’s really a prep per se but…. I’ve been wanting a Jetboil Luna satellite burner to go with my Jetboil Genesis stove. Love the stove but a third burner for making coffee when Jeep camping seemed ideal. Also needed the 1L pot. Was shopping online and local when I decided to check out Campmor. I got my Genesis there more than a year ago for a very good price. Jetboil makes high quality stuff but it’s not cheap. Love the Genesis. Great stove. Well, Campmor is having a 25% off sale AND free shipping over $49. Got the stove and pot for around $100 less than locally. Finished wiring in my generator transfer switch. Did not do any lighting circuits, because that would draw attention. It is only the boiler, water heater, phone panel, freezer, fridge, and a circuit that lights our gas stove. Next I'm wiring in a smaller transfer for the boiler only that will allow me to run a very small and efficient generator overnight for heat only. That should call much less attention than a big open cage generator rattling along like they do. I put an RV access panel in the outside basement access door so I can pass cables to both transfers without letting the house stand open. It's also nice for passing air hose outside from my shop compressor or extra extensions for whatever outside needs we have. I do need some kind of alarm that will sound if power gets cut overnight by, for example, maybe someone messing with my generator. |

Made a trip to my "local" discount food store (45min one way). They mostly have non perishables close to or past their best by date, but a good bit of frozen stuff and some produce that is just on the verge of spoiling. Bought 24lbs of strawberries ($21), made 15pts+ of jam, plus some in the freezer, some dehydrating, and a few pounds in the fridge for eating soon. 6lbs of mushrooms ($12), half are in the dehydrator. 16lbs of sliced salami ($40) now vacuum sealed and in the fridge. 8lbs of slice sandwich pepperoni ($20) also vac packed and frozen. Some ham and turkey as well and other stuff like mayo and vinegar that was a little cheaper than normal. That was a lot of food prep/preservation. I'm tired now.

I saved seeds from every year since 2016. Some years I had an abundance. I may plant a few of them in a separate area and see how many sprout up based on year. This may be a fun experiment to see the rates. Mostly Bush beans Asparagus beans Some old pepers. Swiss Chards Watermelon |

Just ordered a starlink mini. I have a Harbor Freight case laying around so I plan to set the case up with mini for emergency use. I'm going to subscribe for the $5/month plan which is unlimited, but very slow, sufficient for text and maybe calls. If I ever really need it like a NC flood scenario, I can just switch the $50/month plan on the fly. Next step is to figure out battery packs and solar charging. I'm admittedly inept when it comes to electricity. |

Basic web browsing is fine, and you can use youtube at 480p with some buffering. Streaming music like pandora also works with slight buffering. Nice thing about it is if you want or need faster it only takes a few clicks. This reminds me, it's been a month or so since I hooked mine up. Best to get updates on occasion prior to needing it during an outage situation. |

Here's a pic of it in use at Yellowstone where I was getting 200mbps download speeds. The storage case came from Amazon.  |

We also have a Starlink mini (and regular Starlink for the house). We use ours for traveling in areas with little to no cell connection. On the standby plan we can stream music and light internet surfing. For longer trips we’ll turn it on for the duration of the trip and have full speeds. I still have to find a mounting solution in the Jeep. |

Squats and a 2.5 mile easy run. My Achilles is still recovering from two 12 hour training days last week (range and tactics) and 8 hours of jiu jitsu yesterday. Signed up for a pistol match on Saturday. Helped a church with active shooter planning yesterday. Planning to introduce a new shooter to pistol shooting Sunday. Trying to make me and my community better. |

Ordered up another round of oil for future oil changes. Now I just need to make sure everything I have on hand is rotated properly so I use up the older stuff first. |

My twelve year old was right there with me for all of it. He had a big smile on his face after a full weekend of work. |

Ordered 250 feet of wildland fire hose and raked a bunch of forest duff away from the house, probably have a couple acres left to do. Already had the first credible threat forest fire this season, just a mile directly upwind from my place, last Friday. Thankfully we have an A+ wildland fire crew in my area and they had it out in under an hour. |

Ordered another case of 5 quart x3 5w30 oil. Need to grab another 2.5 gallons of diesel oil and some more gear oil. I normally keep around 1 years worth of oil changes for all my vehicles and equipment. I’m going to increase that to 2-3 years worth given the coming oil price hikes and probable future shortages. Need to pick up another 5 gallon bucket of tractor transmission/hydraulic fluid too. It’s due for a change anyway and once I change it, it’s good for a few years at my rate of use. Also ordered a set of tires for my Jeep. Was planning on waiting till later this year but found a good deal on the tires I wanted. Figure with oil going up in price, tires will likely go up in price too. |

I use maybe a gallon or two of bar oil a year. I didnt plan on traveling to Tractor supply in the near future and wally world sends it to my doorstep so Even if there isn't a huge shortage, I will use it all eventually. I use Rotella 15w40 in several of my powersports and can use it in my mini excavator, small engines, or as bar oil if needed so I stack that pretty deep as my universal backup. I prefer to run a semi synthetic 10w30 in my mini because I do use it in the winter on occasion. All good on 3 year's worth of vehicle oil changes at this point. I went through and organized it by date as I always just put the newer stuff in the back but now that I have more than my average 2 year rotation I started writing the purchase year on each bottle to make sure I use the oldest stuff first as I am sure some of it will start to approach the 5 year mark before use. I warned my family and a few friends. Most shrugged it off as "tin foil" but my dad and brother did get a year or two worth of supplies for their small business needs. |

I laughed at your comment about only using 5-6 gallons of premix a year not being much! I use 1 gallon every 1-2 years…..so I REALLY don’t use that much! I have a weedeater and 2 chainsaws. But, I don’t cut a lot of wood and my weedeater doesn’t really get used all that much either….most of the time. And when my 15 ish year old Stihl weedeater dies, I’m replacing it with a Milwaukee M18. But, it just won’t die. Every year I think this is the year I go electric. This year for the first mowing, it cranked up with two pulls of the cord. Guess I’m not buying the Milwaukee this year….. A few of my friends are heeding my advice….and a few aren’t. When shortages happen, I’m just going to say….”see I told you” |

| Haven't bought true "bar and chain" oil in close to 20 years. 3 Stihl MS290's do well on pretty much any clean oil I have laying around- usually 10w30. Considering they have all seen a lot of use and more so after Helene, I don't think it's a problem. And saves a boatload of money going that route. |

Can’t believe I’ve never joined in this thread. This weekend we finished the soil, fencing, and gate for our 36’x42’ garden. Will have some raised beds and a variety of produce. Topped off the generator propane and bulk fuel storage for the equipment. Cars serviced and tires ordered for the 4Runner. Inventoried all the long term food and freezer contents. Cleaned a “pantry” my grandfather built in the 50’s and filled it with a Sam’s Club order. At the kids egg hunt up the road spent some time with a few neighbors discussing processing the trees I’m having harvested on my land for use in wood burners- we’ve all got them and more help is appreciated with the work. Maybe I’ll get some hand me down chickens in exchange for taking them to the shooting club I’m a member of. We’re lucky to have the people nearby that we have, an irreplaceable asset. |

Ordered more oil. Should be set after this order arrives. I don’t know if this link will work but there’s actually a reduction in price online for Mobil 1 oils. Paid $80 for 3 five gallon jugs vs $89 in store. Not a big savings but the shipping is also free. https://www.walmart.com/brand/mobil/february-case-pack/20038691 Also picked up a couple gallons of mineral spirits. I use a lot of it for cleaning. No idea if the shortage will affect things like mineral spirits but I’ll use it so good purchase. Picked up a couple bottles of pre mix oil (1 gallon per bottle) and another bottle of bar and chain oil. I just mixed up a gallon of pre mix as well so I should be in good shape for quite some time. I use Echo Red Armor which is a little pricey for 2 cycle oil but I’ve had good luck with it and it’s supposed to be a good oil. I heard somewhere that nitrile gloves may become in short supply so I’ll probably pick up a few boxes of them soon too. No idea if that’s true but I’ll use them regardless. |

It was on sale for 75 bucks per 3 pack but my local store and the closest out of town Wally World are OOS on all Mobil One for our vehicles.

I’m not generally one to post my purchases, but it’s been a spendy kind of month. Oil from Costco came in. Paper products should be here today. 2032’s and EWL came in (to replace the bottle of EWL that fell over on my workbench while I was out of town. Let’s just say that plywood surface is unlikely to rust). A package from the OTTE sale should be here today. Mags coming in steadily before July 1. Finalizing some other purchases that will be unavailable after July 1. Otherwise, been mulching around the garden beds and chicken run. Getting fences built slowly. |
