How close would you put your stand to an existing/permanent stand?

Another hunter who got there first stand?

How about to the neighbors food plot?

How about if you just walk up on a guy sitting on a log?

What do you consider proper etiquette?

Public or private land?

Personally, I wouldn’t hunt where I could see another hunter. If it’s a hunting club, most have rules.

Safety first , I never hunt public land during shotgun season. I've seen people almost killed over a f-ing deer.

I have private property.  Have a huge wooden treestand that's been here for 10 + years.  It sits 30 yards from property line.

Neighboring property was clearcut 2 years ago so you can see all 500 acres of it now.

Today I see two stands not 50 and 80 yards from me.  Property is leased to a hunt club.

Their property can do as they want. But I don't think I'd be that close in rifle season.

Kinda worries me.

View of food plot from my stand.  Treestand they put up is beside the black spot at end. Next to big pine.

Plot predated clear-cutting so it really close to property line. Just a ditch separation.

But who thinks this is a good spot to sit?  I would be shooting right at them if deer was in food plot.

I talk to them regularly.  They get new members every year and no one gives them direction.

Tomorrow is first day of gun season in VA. So they set up stands yesterday.

Tomorrow tens of thousands of dogs will be turned loose to chase deer so guys can sling lead at them running by.

I will just hunt another area until I can speak with the leader of the club.

It never ceases to amaze me, as I work in the woods, that 90% of the stands I see are with 10 yards of a property line.

No such thing from what I've seen.
Ass-hatt neighbor to S.E. put a pre- fab stand about 35' off property line, right next to my tree stand that had been there 3-5 years.
Another Ass-hatt neighbor S. of him built treestand on (not next to) property line situated to watch MY property(he had a field he could have watched @ same location.

Probably because they want to shoot deer in your food plot.

Yep tree stands matter less when they run the dogs. I need to check one of my properties and see if they run dogs on them.  My grandpappy hunted here, well he should have bought it then.

Half hour before daylight and dogs are barking in all directions.  Guys are loading them into the trucks from the kennels.

Yeah, I inherited two stands that are within 25 yards.  All my others are 50-100 from edges.

Last year the club set up ladder stands on my property. I guess when you clear cut it's hard to find a tree.😂

I really wish they would do more to limit hunting with dogs.  They ruin hunting season for anyone not using them since there is no way to actually make sure the dogs stay on their own property.

Just heard a guy fire 9 shots in about 40 seconds.

The clubs hunt with semi auto shotguns and if the dogs and deer are leaving the property the fire in front to turn them around

Thankfully he was a mile away from me.

OP, you put your big stand near your property line and situated your food plot so your firing line goes onto someone else's property. You can't really argue that what you decided to do on your property limits what your neighbor can do on theirs.

Yeah I agree, this was done long before the current situation.   I was only wondering who would make the decision to hang a stand in the location at end of plot.

I don't care if they setup to get deer coming and going to plot that's just hunting.

In addition to the ladder stand they also built a huge wooden stand about 50 yards behind that location so they might benefit from my plot.

That makes 3 stands within about 50 yards of the plot.

As an above guy said, I try to put stands where I can't see others.  For both safety and peace of mind

Besides, they have a 100 acre corn field about 300 yards away. So not sure how much my 1/4 acre plot actually does.

Just hope people get out and hunt and come home safely, maybe harvest some game and enjoy life

Grew up in a part of Va that dog hunting wasn’t the norm.  Now live and primarily hunt in one where it’s 50/50.

I have no use for the ones that hunt adjacent to my primary hunting land.  Turn dogs on the road, across tracts to push in to their timber.  They were even running this morning, hunting “rabbits” I’m sure.

Back to the original question.  I try to be cognizant of others, and won’t hunt within eyesight of another stand on an adjoining property.  I do however have stands that are close to the property line shooting back in to my land.  When placed, there were no stands on the neighbors side in the area.

Have one neighbor that has a stand 10 yards from my cow pasture looking over the field.  It pisses me off, but I haven’t seen any evidence that he’s shot one on my side.

Yeah the dogs running across is an issue.   Saturday morning the hunt clubs dropped about 40 dogs on the road in front of camp.   Most went the right direction with them, about 5 wondered aimlessly around my farm for the first two hours before leaving.

I will say the clubs next to us take care to keep dogs away, mostly because we shoot the deer.  The past 7-8 years we have seen very few dogs actually pushing a deer.

Wow... I don't have a "dog" in this fight (pardon the pun)... But I can see both sides of the dog hunting/deer hunting aspect.

I have had dozens of hunts ruined out in VA's Cumberland State Forest, that I had no choice but to leave the area and drive 2 hours out to the National Forest to get away from the deer hounds.  I mean, it's cool, I get it.  It's just not my thing...

Regarding my slam on Virginia's WMA's (in another post):  Pffffftttt... You ain't gonna see sh**...  Every single creature instantly goes nocturnal...  Unless you (illegally) go out at 1:00am with Night Vision Goggles, again, you ain't gonna see sh**...

I don't know how it turned into a dog hunting argument, I don't know anything about that.

Assuming you are only asking about your own private land, one factor could be your local laws on game recovery and the property size. If your state requires you to ask permission to recover wounded game, and you own 100 acres of land, it would be a rather stupid idea to put a deer stand 30 feet from the property line. On the other hand if you only own 10 acres, than it doesn't really matter, it isn't very far to the property line no matter what. Obviously set them up so you are shooting deer on your property, don't set yourself up for a shot overlooking a property line. I don't own hunting land, I mostly public land hunt, but I do hunt some private land I have permission to be on. I even have some permanent stands on family owned land. One of the downsides, and something to consider if you want permanant stands is that every single one I have built or helped build, I have wanted to move at some point. A big wood box stand on legs is huge ordeal to move. If I were to do it over again, at the very least I would build it on skids so it could be slid somewhat. or even loaded onto a trailer. Trying to tip one over with a tractor, flip it on a bed, and pick it back up is not fun. I have also found I much prefer not using the big box stands at all anyway. I've gone mostly to clearing/brushing spots for ground blinds, and using good quality Lucky's brand blinds which can stay out for a long time. I even forgot one out there for the second year, and it's still as good as ever. I do use some ladder stands too which are fairly easy to move. They are fairly comfortable, but don't offer much protection without adding roofs or sides, or other things.

I don't really understand your questions about who gets there first, or the guy on a log. That's not something that is going to happen on private property, unless they are trespassers.

When it comes to the neighbors food plot, I honestly have no idea what the neighbors are doing out there. I sometimes talk to them, and I would a lot more if I owned the property, but I'm not going to be digging into their buisness unless I'm going to talk to them about a QDM agreement, and if they don't want to, that's that. If they put a food plot right on the property line, that's their problem. Your job is to put a stand in the best location to intercept deer, nothing more, nothing less. I wouldn't put a stand 10 feet off the line facing the plot, that's just being a jerk, but putting a stand on a deer trail 40 yards off the line, there's nothing wrong with that.

One of the things i meant to get to with the permanent stand thing is that your neighbors will change around you. A deer stand that's been in the same spot for 15 years could suddenly have a house built 150 yards away. What used to be a slough could be turned into a farm field. What use to be friendly neighbors, could be sold to jerks. What used to be woods, could have a food plot planted. Any of those things could happen, and I've seen all of those happen around my own family land in the last 15 years. One deer stand I built there when I was just 16 used to be in isolated woods with grass CRP behind it. Something like 15 years ago someone bought the CRP field and built a house on it not 150 yards from the stand. This year one of those fancy store bought deer shack stands got put up in the corner of the property, just a few feet from the property line, and maybe 75 yards from my old stand. I'm not sure what that guy's end game is, it's just overlooking his 3 acres of grass 75 yards behind his house.

The point I'm trying to make is that things change, and what might seem great this year, may feel iffy next year. Just use your best judgment.

Unfortunately it seems that way.  East of the Blue Ridge you are often having to deal with hunt clubs that run dogs and fuck up the hunting for everyone who isn't using them.

Dog running hunt clubs think hunting is showing up around 9, fucking around for an hour while you assign people to the picket line, letting the dogs loose and then having people shoot wildly at running deer with semi-auto shotguns.  I was part of one of those for exactly one season and only 2 hunts that season as I hated it because I consider that deer harvesting, not hunting.

Fortunately I now have a place west of the Blue Ridge where dogs (for deer at least) are not allowed so I can hunt as God intended....alone...

A friend of mine used to own land that adjoined paper company land that was leased to a different group every year. Several times we found tree stands on his property since his trees were taller. One year the lease holder threatened to put him in jail. That Monday he called the paper company and that Monday his lease was terminated for violation of the lease terms. They crossed a fire break and passed the painted trees and no trespassing signs to put up stands.  Contacting the property owner might get you a buffer zone if you ask nicely.

Thankfully we don't have to deal with dogs in the upstate.

In my experience most stands here are near property lines, especially smaller properties.  However, all the stands I know of/have used face in to the property.  Facing out seems weird and can be problematic if the deer runs far.

I don't have many neighbors at all so my view might be skewed since we all get along well.

Tracking seems to go fine here too as long as you make contact with the landowners.  Hell we will even help you. Generally a bad idea to be walking around with a gun on others land at night without asking.

Happy Hunting all!

I’m with this. I’d bet money every time they go out, the. Use binos to see if you’re in that tower stand. They hunt your food plot when you aren’t there. It’s really easy to turn around and shoot, then say it just ran on your property.

First rule of public success is if you see sign of people, go elsewhere. I'll have several spots scouted so I can just move on to the next one if I see that anyone else has moved in since I was last there.

In clubs, I'm not joining unless there is at least 100 acres/per member and rules about staying a couple hundred yards apart.

Just after lunch on the day before gun season they were dressed in orange one on foot another on an atv driving all through where the deer bed. Yes its not my property so I got no say but Jesus what a bunch of damn morons.

So the season is winding down this week.    It's been interesting, the hunt club who put up stands close to me...never saw single person using them.

Back in November I watched a bunch of drones flying over the property.  Word on the street is the drones were game warden driven and the hunt club got pinched for illegal baiting.

Not certain what happened but no one has hunted the property all season.

We have had much success, several new hunters took a deer and are now avid hunters.  Several even got rifles for Xmas.

Stay safe and get some kids out in the woods

Property line sitters bug me.  It's not illegal but I just don't think it's right.  Watched a 2.5 year old 8 pt walk across my food plot on opening morning of firearm season onto my neighbors property.  I was telling it in my head "buddy don't do it if you want to live another year or two."   30' onto there property I hear a shot and watch it basically flip over.  I say that to say this - this neighbor is essentially hunting my food plot and being a property line sitter.  Again, nothing I can do about it, but I don't have to like it.

All bait and salt blocks etc must be removed by Sept 1.  Nothing again until Jan 10 or so can be put out.  Also you are to remove the dirt that might have minerals or salt in it.

Who owns the property? My friends property had an adjoining lease that was paper company land.  When the leader of the club threatened to have him arrested on his land he contacted the paper company and they cancelled his lease the same day.  The next year the new lease no longer included 60 acres that adjoined his land to leave a buffer zone. The paper company land and his land had a fire break and painted trees between them. These guys still hunted his land on several occasions.

I'm glad I'm in a state that generally disallows dogs for deer hunting.  (There's exceptions for tribal lands / members.)  I love 'em for bird hunting, but none of that what I'm reading above sounds like fun to me.

I don't like posting up, using a blind, or stand within sight of another hunter.  I don't even like posting up within shouting distance of another hunter, although opposite sides of a hill facing opposite safe directions is reasonable.  I like getting set up before dawn, and having a day of peace.  Shots in the distance don't bother me.  Other people on my 80 acres discuss where they're going to post so as to not overlap, and historically I've posted or been in a blind in a wetland-adjacent positions, and prefer other human-inhabitable terrain on nearby to decreases chance encounters with humans.

When I'm on public land, I'll sacrifice a good spot for a more secluded spot.  Meat in the freezer is great, but I can always buy meat.  I can't replace a non-relaxing weekend or a shooting accident due to being too close to someone who may not be responsible.

In my ideal day deer hunting, I only see or hear another human being when I head back to camp, or if we're checking on each other after hearing shots or following a trail that returns camp.  It doesn't matter if I shoot a deer as long as I watch an icy sunrise illuminate all the cycles of nature before me during a quiet season of preparation for renewal in spring.

Hunting, to me, is communion with nature, like a religious retreat.  Those I choose to hunt with are almost like a part of a church, even though I'd never describe it to them that way.  They're the only ones I like to interact with while deer hunting, and minimally so.  I don't like to have interactions with others who aren't of the same state of mind while in the field.

Now get back to camp, and all are welcome.  I just don't want to have a stand or blind or post spot anywhere near others.

More hunters should paint their stands orange and use reflectors

As someone never owning my own hunting land but have hunted military installions and public land throughout the US.  I make it a point to avoid other hunters while actively hunting.  If I drive in and there's a vehicle parked at the trail head, I'll go elsewhere.  If I'm stalking and I see someone, I'll wave if we make contact and back out.  If I'm in my stand and they're walking toward me, again wave and see if they leave.

Along the NC coast where I now live and hunt, dog hunting is allowed during gun deer season.  None during archery or muzzleloading.  Also seems the clubs only run dogs on weekends.  Hence, I'll deer hunt during the week days.  Advantage of being either on leave (from OCONUS) and retired.

I won't use someone elses stand even if unmarked and abondoned on game lands (public) and legal to do so.  Some areas prohibit permanent stands and only allow climbers or ground blinds.

Agree.  Deer don't give a fuck what color your tree stand is.  Safety first.
