Will be purchasing one of these scopes soon for a hunting rifle. Anyone have experience with the tract? Leaning Tract at this point, but the Lupy is a tad less expensive. I have Luepold on most of my rifles, but always on the lookout for other options. Being direct, I have no oppertunity to look throught the Tract, so looking to hear from those that have. Please, no replies regarding other scopes. Focus people.....no pun intended. Lol. |

I've never seen a Leopold 3-12x40mm. I don't see anything in the VX3HD or VX5HD line either. Do you mean the VX3HD 4.5-14x40mm? I'm a big fan of the CDS concept, which Leupold is about the only one on the market doing right now. Unfortunately a lot of their CDS scopes have worthless reticles, but in this case it does appear you can get the 4.5-14x40mm in the Windplex reticle. I would rather it be the Triplex reticle, but it should work nicely. One of the downsides to that scope is going to be that 40mm objective. In low light your exit pupil is going be be very small at the upper ranges, only 2.9mm at 14x. They do make a 50mm version which is still going to be sufferings on the higher end, but should be a much better performer in lower light, especially at the middle ranges of power. |

Derp, I didn't scroll down far enough on the Mark 3HD line. There is a 4-12x40mm that I'm assuming you are asking about. I've never used one, so can't give specifics. The biggest difference I see is the Leupold is a SFP and the Tract is a FFP scope. I generally prefer SFP, but on a scope like this a FFP may be the better option. The Tract is also a 30mm, vs 1" for Leupold, and is almost double the weight at 28.3 ounces, compared to 16.2 ounces for the Leupold. It appears parallax is adjustable on the Tract and fixed on the Leupold. It also appears the Tract is 10mils per revolution, and 5mils on the Leupold. For a hunting specific scope, the Leupold is considerably lighter, and offers an illuminated reticle, and I prefer SFP. Those are my preference for hunting scopes. The Tract Toric is more of a target oriented scope, but should be fine. For these power ranges, I would have to lean to the Tract features. I would probably lean to a different model in the Leupold line. I would take that Leupold Mark 3HD 3-9x40mm Illuminated firedot TMR over either of them. |
