Survival is survival, it’s your funeral, blah, blah, blah. I don’t want to be surprised after stockpiling a bunch of something, only to find out it tastes like crap. I like to know what my prepped tastes like. I’ve eaten my share of Mountain House over the years - it’s generally good quality, keeps great, and is maybe on the higher end, price-wise. The latter can be mitigated by watching for sales, especially on #10 cans. “Mexican Style Adobo Rice & Chicken”, (I think) is one of the more recent flavors. I hadn’t tried it, and was wondering if it was worth keeping a few around for “just in case”.  It works like all the rest- open, get rid of the oxygen absorber, add 1.5c of boiling water, stir, seal, wait 5 mins, stir again, seal, wait another 4-5m, and eat. Appearance:  I didn’t dress it up, or turn it out into a bowl or anything- I just opened the package and snapped a pic. Looks like basic rice and beans with some vegetables and chicken. Smell is appetizing. There were a few bits that maybe weren’t fully hydrated, maybe 6m + 6m would be better. Amount of meat was acceptable. Flavor: It’s pretty much basic rice and beans with some stuff added. Not really spicy, not overly salty, a touch on the bland side, maybe (I was kind of expecting a little more spice, I guess, given its name). That said, I love rice and beans. It’s something i grew up eating, so it’s more or less comfort food. It would be hard to screw it up for me. The veggies were really good (tomatoes, zucchini). Chicken was … chicken. Some freeze-dried chicken tastes and chews like vaguely chicken flavored styrofoam, but MH tends to be good. This felt like actual meat. Pretty good, nice texture. In fact, the texture overall was pleasing. I added a pinch of salt, and a little hot sauce, which woke it up for me. It was acceptable as-is, but this little addition made it much better. With the high amount of sodium in it (nutritional info added) I wouldn’t think it’d need any salt, honestly. Conclusion: didn’t blow me away, but far from “just eat this as a last resort to not starve”. I liked enough to not only keep some around, but if I was bored/tired and didn’t feel like making anything (like tonight), it wouldn’t be a terrible dinner at all. Score: 6.5/10  |

The recommended wait times never work for me. It takes about 20 minutes to rehydrate so it sits next to the wood stove In the tent. I’ll have to try that chicken adobo. Good. Review. Attached File |
