I deer hunt in Midwest, hog hunted in TX, GA and FL. Now I want to go shoot some prairie dogs for a couple of days. I see places offering accommodations meals and putting you on a town every day for as much as 500-800 a day. I don't care about all the luxury. I can stay in motel 6 and eat fast food no problem. Is there a mid range outfitter that would just meet me in the morning, put me on a town, and do it again next day. Thats all I need from them, will arrange my own stay and meals. How much would it cost me? I am willing to drive so anywhere within 12 hours from IL is fine. Tell me more! |

Dude, no reason to spend all that money unless you want to. Go drive around, find some property that has a town on it, stop, talk to the farmer, chances are you can probably get on his place for the day for the price of a decent bottle of whiskey or something comparable. If you come across as a decent guy that knows how to shoot, most of them will gladly let you on their property. |

You have to get west of the Missouri river for prairie dogs. I go to South Dakota and North Dakota. Contact the fish and wildlife office and they will usually have a list or know someone that has dog towns. North Dakota is way cheaper but a farther drive. https://gfp.sd.gov/contactus/ https://gf.nd.gov/ Bring plenty of ammo too. I like V-max bullets as they explode the little bastards if you hit them right. And watch out for ground burrowing owls. (endangered species) At 300 yards they can sometimes look like a dog. |

Shot my first prairie dog last week. It was a side quest after getting an elk. Was bored so I walked out to a field with my big game rifle, 300 PRC. Within a few minutes made my first shot. Hit in the chest the head literally shot up and landed 21 yards away (we actually ranged it). Later that day I borrowed a 17HMR took out 8 more. Next day the count was only 4. These were confirmed kills. Some I couldn't tell if were dead or just disappeared. I loved it. Now I am looking into public land hunting for them next year. Even rebuilding one of my ARs for it. I learned a few things too. I was told to just leave them after you shoot them. They are pests and hated by cattle ranchers. The bodies disappear overnight. Coyotes and vultures among other critters provide clean up duties. Magpies get them too but I don't think they can carry off the bodies, they only leave the clean picked bones. I can see it being a very addictive hobby. If anyone is compiling a list of members who are looking for a place to shoot them add me to it.
