2nd year rifle hunting, only deer I've seen all week. About 40 yards away, bedded down in pines, hind quarters facing me. Shooting a Win 94 in 30-30 with a scope. Watched her about 45-60 seconds before she jumped up and bolted. I wasn't loving the idea of a head shot - what would you do? I've got 2 friends that said I should have shot, 1 that agreed I shouldn't have. Attached File Attached File |

Good for you!!! I passed on a pretty good 8pnt last night.He was about 150yrds standing in brush,broadside a couple of times. The real kiler was it was about 10min past legal shooting hours,dark enough that good shot placement through the brush was questionable even with my equipment. My 7-08 out of a cold barrel will bullseye a one inch square @ 100yrds,but I passed for those 2 reasons.There will be another!! |

Agree all those little branches in the way, too much chance for the bullet to be deflected, with a very small target in the head shot. |

Guy at work shot a deer with an arrow sticking out of its head yesterday. Its baffling how many shit hunters are out there. I killed one without a jaw from a previous hunter. With a leg missing from botched shots. Ive seen it all. |

I consistently make 100 yard and in neck shots BUT I shoot rifles A LOT and I am quite comfortable doing so. Tonight I shot a buck at 50 yards kneeling in thick chop, but again, I was comfortable with the shot. Only YOU can make the call as to what shot is within your comfort zone. Pics can be misleading... if I looked in my scope and it was full of branches and twigs, no, I'm not shooting... but if I have three or four unobstructed inches (elevation wise) to slip a bullet through I'll take the shot... I've done it many times, even with a bow. Windage isn't a big issue most of the time but with sight over bore and the bullet flight path, elevation issues matter. Bottom line... do what you're comfortable with and pay no mind to the peanut gallery. Over time you will come to know your own limitations. Sounds like you did one of the hardest things many hunters can't do and that's not trying too hard and forcing a bad shot... for that I say WELL DONE. |

It's heartbreaking. I'll burn up tags without question to put severely wounded deer down. |
