So I've been researching and plan on making a purchase this week.

From my research, the TFO NXT seems to be the best buy for the money. My question is should I buy a separate rod and reel? Sierra has a Lamson Liquid for $70 and a TFO Pro II rod on closeout for $130. So I'd be $200 in and still not have a case, line, tippet and etc.

Is there that big of a difference in quality for a beginner or should I just buy the combo and get on the water?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Combo sets are generally of dubious quality for one or the other or both.

Depending on what you’re fishing for, weight of rod, etc. unless you’re getting about a 6 weight or heavier, the reel is nothing more than a line holder.
