With these guns being out of production and being used to shooting Mossbergs and Brownings (safety location) shotguns, is the Mossberg 500 20ga slug gun a reasonable substitute as a pump action brush gun? Was looking at a pump gun with a red dot. |

Sure if that is the route you want to fo. Are you just that used to the pump action? Did your Remy break? Awful lot of choices out there. Savage or ruger scout or hog rifles. 350 leg or 450 bm ar15 Lever gun in 30/30, 357, 44, 45 C, 45/70 Another Remy off gun broker 20 gauge does have the benee of running buck shot... |

Define problems with 308 scouts? You are right about lever guns being spendy, they are the hotness right now. There are some jewels out there if you look. Was just looking at a thread on rebranded Winchesters and Marlins sold by Sears, JC Penny, Woolworth and other outlets back in the day. Those old levers can still be had at fair prices. You do you. If you want to go with the 20 ga then go for it. |

The Mennonite Machine Gun has climb up to ridiculously high prices. I've been on the hunt for on OP, in either .30-06 Springfield, .308 Winchester, .270 Winchester, or .243 Winchester. And they're all either rusted rattle traps that aren't safe enough to fire .41 Remington Rimfire and they're still $900 or they're pristine and go for over $1,800 now.  In the end, I'm settling on a NEF single shot or sticking with my stable of bolt and lever guns. |

| One note on the 760/7600 is make sure whatever you buy comes with a mag or two. Long action factory mags run about $100 each on ebay if you can find them. Short action are a bit less and easier to find. |

There's nothing wrong with a 20 gauge Mossberg 500 slug gun. With a rifled barrel, acceptable accuracy can be had to 100 yards. They offer a lot of power in a light compact package for not a lot of money. The downsides are recoil and ammo cost. Recoil isn't horrible, but it's beyond many typical rifle rounds, close to 300 win mag. The cost of slugs varies from expensive to "dear God". The cheapest slugs are still over $1 per shot. Remington Accutips are up around $5 per shot. The best alternative to a Remington 7600 that I can think of is a Savage model 99. You aren't going to find a good one for $400, but you can find them for surprisingly good prices sometimes. I like them better than Remington 7600, honestly they might be one of the most underrated hunting rifles out there. Henry does make a long ranger model, but they are pretty spendy. |

There are low recoil 20 ga slugs - 3/4 oz @ 1350. Haven't shot a group w/ em. ETA: Maverick 88 receiver is not drilled and tapped like the 500 is. |

| I don't know what I was smoking earlier, I must have had 12 gauge on the mind. Regular 20 gauge slugs are not bad at all for recoil, right in there with normal rifle rounds. The 12 gauge is the bad one, and when you compensate by rifle weight, 300 win mag doesn't even compare. |

Attached File I sent it off to Kevin Aucoin at TGI Creations. Gun was rusted inside. Kevin did the barrel chop to 18” and cerakote along with a new front sight. Skinner came out with a new rear sight with rail while I was waiting. I’ll give a range report when I get to shoot it. Tasco is just a place holder for a leupold 1.5-4. |

Not a huge fan of them myself, would've also favored a Savage 99 or another lever. With that said, that gun came out nice! Should be a good one for your needs with a scope on it. Still better get a pump 12ga slug gun just to be sure

Its safety is in same location as my 870 Wingmaster and 572 Fieldmaster pumps. Remington seemed to like the Master naming scheme. |

Picked up another Remington 760 to use this coming deer season. This one is a 1952 vintage 760 in .300 Savage. I got it for a pretty good price as some previous owner had it drilled and tapped for a top mounted Weaver scope mount. I swapped out the Weaver for a Redfield swing/pivot mount so now I can access the factory sights or the Redfield Bear Cub 2.75 X fixed power scope. Gary |
