First let me apologize for the audio but I thought it might help to understand the bad wind conditions I was hunting under last night. We are on the leading edge of that east coast Nor'easter that is still building south of us, but was blowing 15-20 and gusting higher last night. I opened with some Cottontail sound just to be sure there wasn't any coyotes hunting in the ditches really close to me. The closest woods was over half a mile away. Cottontail didn't produce any close up coyotes, so I went to an old proven FoxPro sound Female Lone Howls 1. I had an immediate response from one 750 yds. to my east that was hunting an over grown ditch bank. It answered with several howls and I could see it when it came out from the ditch area and then waited for its partner to arrive from even further east. Nutty Nut Hatch got them coming. They began coming but fading toward the downwind all the time. I tried Submissive Beggar but that didn't change their angle. I went to a fight sound and that turned them up more toward me. The female was in the lead, and I let her get as close as I thought I could allow before she hit my downwind. I was trying to minimize the wind drift of the bullet but not allowing her to get straight downwind. I was having to try and pick an open spot through some ditch bank vegetation. First shot was about 160 yds. and apparently gut shot her. She ran but stopped to spin and gave me another opportunity. The second bullet hit her but didn't put her down. The third strike flattened her. The other coyote was hauling butt back to the east and never looked back. I felt fortunate to make it happen at all last night. I knew they would be hunting before the front, but I hate calling in windy conditions. Anyway the thrid strike was the charm.  Strike Three |
