Depends on how long the outage lasts. A couple of weeks and we'd be fine. A year and a half? Not so much. As someone pointed out, when the city people start fanning out into the country looking for food and water, things would get rowdy fast if the outage lasted long enough. |

I would be fine a lot longer than most, but not as well off as some I guess. At this point I am not too worried. Advanced awareness of what's going on even a few hours ahead of something like this could be helpful. I bet most of the population doesn't even pay attention to any of this other than knowing there are northern light. If there ends up being widespread grid failure caused by a flare, there is a 50/50 shot that it could be very short term or very long term. Knowing why the power is out and being aware can help you plan accordingly and maybe grab some last-minute items, or top off those empty gas cans, or grab a frozen pizza and some beer to enjoy the show. |

Well I would like to get to see the actual aurora if we have the power knocked out! Damn clouds and rain…. But I have a 5000 w gen that can run the well pump, and a Honda EU2000 that can run the freezers and some minor loads at lower fuel use levels. And a fair amount of fuel stored normally- but right now I have many of my fuel cans empty as I am rotating out year and a half old gas and burning it up, and have not yet started refilling any yet. Gotta take care of that! |

The home farm would be fine for a long time. There is a backup cistern water supply, as well as multiple generators & fuel. A wood stove for heat, and several years worth of cut wood. Water, Shelter, heat, & food - as well as a gravity based septic system. We would be as well off as possible given the circumstances. Our family business (rural grocery & hardware store) would likely be looted within a few days. We have already made the decision that we are not going to attempt to defend it if we believe this is a true long term situation, and will leave the doors open when we leave with a note saying help yourselves to the food. Employees should take all they can before leaving. Realistically, what would defending it get us? We shoot a couple of looters before we get shot? We shoot a couple of looters, and once the power is back, and live is back to "normal" we now get shot in revenge? We shoot a couple of looters, and the building gets burnt down later? The contents of the building are worth less than the cost (and time) of building a new building, and I really don't want to shoot my neighbors that have hungry children at home. We live here in this small community, before, during and after any disaster, and I don't want to forget it, nor do I want to give opportunity for people to think they have a valid reason for revenge later. The above would stand for any long term disaster. Sometimes you may just have to loose. Might as well as accept it. |

Well, that was fun, a good chunk of Wyoming dropped off line around lunch time. The coal fired plant closest to us went off line too. Almost everyone is back on line after about 4 hours but it was a good test of the back generator before winter hits. Massive Outage Left 93,000 Customers Without Power Across Wyoming, Region A massive power outage left most of northeast Wyoming in the dark Thursday, along with areas in Montana and South Dakota. Nearly 93,000 customers were without power at one point. The Dave Johnston power plant also caught fire after the power went out. Dave Johnston Didn't Explode Dalgarn was emphatic that the Dave Johnston fire started after the power outages. Outages at various locations on the grid can prompt fires at others, Budd said. For her own part, she wanted to dispel rumors that the Dave Johnston plant had exploded. It had only caught fire, she said.  |

I knew that transmission lines had a kind of breaker in them that can trip due to voltage spikes. The linemen have a big pole they use to connect/disconnect when doing repairs. I have wondered if those breakers (not the correct term for them) would help protect the grid in an EMP or solar storm. It seems we now know the answer for a solar storm event. The voltage buildup in the lines is slow enough that the breakers will trip in time to save the transformers and other equipment, though there can be follow on effects amd damage. Overall the grid will be repairable in the bear future. That is what happened in Wyoming according to the power company. Jury is still out on an EMP since the voltage jump there is much faster and can propagate in smaller antennas than a solar storm, possibly bypassing the breakers. While the long waveform energy from the solar storm requires a long antenna formed by the power lines. |
