I have an older sleeping bag that's going into my weekend camping pack. Should I roll it, or stuff it, or fold it, or...? It also has the flap on it like this one, and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with that. Suggestions appreciated!! Thanks! John

Down bags, stuff in compression sacks on the trail and then stuff loosely into large cotton storage bags at home. Synthetic bags, roll into compression sacks on the trail and then stuff loosely into larger cotton storage bags at home. |

I doubt a bag like that is going to stuff very easily. Probably roll it and strap it over the top of the pack, or something like that. Maybe a trash bag to help keep it dry. The flap is a bivi awning to keep rain off your face. The bag might be waxed cotton, or something like that. It's basically Good Idea Fairy stuff that's only effective in the least challenging conditions. In most conditions, I expect that whatever waterproofing scheme they intended for that bag never stood a chance of working. |

The flap is dial purpose. (A) Wraps around bag if you roll it up starting at the foot of the bag (B) Space for your pillow to keep it on cloth & off dirt when you are in the bag. Bigger_Hammer

The bag rolls up into it and it's basically a spot to put a pillow/pack. Not going to be able to anything about any amount of whether. Aside from the aforementioned Rhodesian bag, the rest all get stuffed into a compression bag and thrown in a pack. I have large cotton drawstring bags for storing at home. |

Should have read OP before I voted. I'd role a bag like that one. Down (or synthetic down-like) insulated bags shouldn't be rolled, certainly not folded & roled; nor stored compressed. Doing so ruins their ability to loft and insulate. |
