Please allow picts of people here who have taken deer with their ARs. The subject comes up every year and it is the same questions over again. I think a sticky would make things a lot easier.
Something like this... 
2002-64gr My first AR15, factory Armalite M15A2 firing a 64gr powerpoint. 
2004-64gr power point from A2 type rifle. 
2005-55gr gameking SP1 type rifle. Yes, I know it is tiny. I was sleeping in my stand and just woke up to see three deer trotting out right in front of me. I didn't have a lot of time to think about how big the deer were before I shot. 
2006-Ok, not killed with an AR but it should have been. Walking through a swamp and this feller jumped up in front of me. I didn't have time to get my rifle unslung so I just qiuck drew my pistol and capped him in the ass as he was running away. Oh, 240gr XTP out of a Ruger Redhawk. Updated! Just wanted to add a few more pictures. 
2007, can't remember much about it but it was a banner year for us and we had dead deer hanging up from trees all over the FRONT yard. Yeah, we are a bunch of rednecks... 
2008, I think that is my .300 whisper when I first put it together. 
2009, definitely the .300 in it's current configuration. 2010, skunked. 
2011, same 300 whisper. I really like this rifle |

How about a slight modification, and just say "Deer taken with an AR-15 Rifle"? Many states don't allow calibers as small as .223 for deer hunting, so a lot of AR-15 kills would be excluded by limiting it to .223. Many use AR-15's in .458 SOCOM, 6.8 SPC, 6.5 Grendel, .50 Beowulf, etc. Just let me know.

Just started hunting latter part of last year (different cameras used): Jul 07 - Very Young Buck taken with 18" Ko-Tonics Bbl 6.8 SPC AR Rifle wearing a Trijicon Accupoint TR21R with LT 12.0 FF Rail; 215 yard shot in chest & face; Factory SSA 110 gr. Pro-Hunters. Entrance & Exit wounds to chest are similar in size.  Sept 07 - Hog taken with 20" Colt SP1 using Iron sights; one 60 yard shot behind left shoulder (lunged); Wolf 62 gr. HP. Buck taken with 22" Remy 750 Synthetic wearing a BSA Deer Hunter Scope; one 75 yard shot above left shoulder (lunged) Handloaded .308 WIN (150 gr. Pro-Hunter/43 gr. Varget). Hog: Entrance wound is deceiving (about .22 size). Under skin is about quarter size with trauma on meat around wound. Lung completely exploded. Bullet completely fragmented (no exit). Buck: Entrance wound is about .30 cal size. Exit wound is about size of a nickel. No meat damage whatsoever.  Same Buck:  Oct 07 - Buck. First shot hit right side rupturing kidney (too far back - trigger pull was off) using Remy 750 and same .308 WIN handload. Follow-up kill-shot seconds later with brother using same 6.8 SPC AR rifle shot on right side of face; Handloaded 6.8 SPC (110 gr. V-Max/29 gr. H322); 198 yards. Buck: Entrance wound is about .30 cal size. Exit wound is about size of nickel. No meat damage whatsoever. No exit wound from 110 gr. V-Max (didn't bother trying to recover bullet).

great thread Gary! i'll have to see if i can dig up a pic of the 7 pointer i took with an AR many years ago. i plan on hunting with an AR again this year, acog on top. will post pics if i get a kill. btw, DO NOT feel bad about that tiny deer ya go. i shot one about that big awhile back. easy to pack out of the woods. + quick and easy to butcher myself. + small young deer = Best Deer Meat I've Ever Had. simple equation. i'd do it again in a heart beat |

This year kill so far. Shot with a varminter type AR15, 20" barrel, 1/8 twist firing a 64gr powerpoint at the incredible range of 25 yards it ran about 30yds and fell over dead. Sire it ain't nuttin spectacular but the deer jerky it will make will taste great. BTW, 100lbs dressed out. |

I finally drew first blood with my RRA AR15 .223 entry tactical.I loaded win 64gr power point bullets with 2015 powder.I had this deer walk in at 10yds so i shot her in the neck and she hit the dirt like a bag of rocks! Awesome knockdown power with a 64gr bullet.

Yeah. Usually an extra point in that area comes out as a forked brow tine or just grows out of the main beam. That one would have caused some problems next year. No one who saw him this year before I killed him saw that back point. I got a pretty good look at him opening day and thought he was just a big eight point. Another guy who was bow hunting on opening day of rifle season got a really good look at him at twenty yards and did not see it. |
| The key to the 223/5.56 killing power is the fragmentation. When I opened up the first deer I shot this yr the lungs were completely shredded from the V-max fragmentation. All the people I hunt with were in complete shock at what such a small bullet could do. The military bullets fragment aswell but if the velocity isnt high enough they will just make a .22 size hole and wont kill as fast if at all as when they fragment, thus the just designed to wound theory comes into play. |

Well, this is the first year that Indiana has allowed any sort of rifle for deer hunting (must be certain "low-powered" rounds), so I haven't amassed any sort of AR-15 deer kills yet (all of my bucks were taken with shotguns.) I've been passing does so far this season waiting on a 125"+ buck. Well, I got in my tree at 6:00 AM this morning. Over the course of the day, I had 12 DIFFERENT does and one little buck come past. It started raining heavily around noon, and never let up. I decided then that if my .458 SOCOM was going to be completely soaked, I was going to kill something with it today for my troubles. At 3:30 PM (after 9 1/2 hours in the tree) a group of 4 does showed up. It was raining so hard that after I flipped my scope covers open, the lenses got wet immediately to the point that I could hardly see through the scope. I found the ribcage of the largest of the four in the crosshairs at around 40 yards or so and pulled the trigger. All four took off running about 30 yards and then stopped to look around. I was thinking to myself, "Man, how could I have missed???" when one of them fell over and started kicking. The others just stood there, and I could have shot another one, but I don't want to overhunt that property, so I let them walk. I didn't do any sort of autopsy in the pouring rain as I gutted it. Entrance wound was dead center of the ribs on the right side. I honestly don't know if there was an exit wound, as the offside ribcage was intact. I was just wanting to get in a warm house.

Took this guy tonight in snowy North Idaho I don't know shit about scoring, but I'm pretty sure its a 7x7, and a friend said it would be 190-195 I'm taking him to the taxidermist tomorrow for a measurement and to decide between a Euro or Full Cape Mount

 For where I hunt (Harrison County, WV) they are huge, LOL. This seasons deer (don't laugh, they are eaters) opening day 6 point:  Biggest deer I have seen on our land, died of blue tongue (EVH) and I found it while dragging my 6 out. It's a nice 8, the Game Warden gave me a non hunt tag so I could go down the road with it.  My buddies largest deer to date, long time in the coming. These 2 hunt hard year after year so it was nice to see them both connect with their best.   6 point on the trail cam (no one hunted over the feeder):

WOW! What a brute! That is a beautiful buck and a once in a lifetime animal. You should do a shoulder mount as a minimum. If it were me I'd do a pedistal mount. Let us know what he scores! . |
