So, the average RV/Camper probably cannot handle an AMSEC TL30 RSC to keep the pew pews safe, but sticking yer boomstick under the mattress also seems sub optimal. So, without messing up any PERSEC, what do yall think is acceptable security for guns and ammo while travelling and camping? What if you live in your RV/camper (as opposed to just going out on vacation) As a secondary question, what are arfcom's thoughts on Fire Protection? In a home safe you can DIY add more drywall to increase fire protection, but drywall is kinda heavy for mobile applications. They make fireproof and fire retardant foam that might last long enough to protect the contents during a fire - especially because RV/Camper fires seem pretty quick. |

Since most RV components (except Airstream) are made with weight-savings in mind, there aren't exactly a lot of sturdy places for a safe, to attach a safe, or even just secure firearm storage. Creatively hiding is probably your best bet. Whenever we vacation with our travel trailer, I have two pistols hidden inside the trailer and any long guns are secured in the tow vehicle. Ditto with fire protection. Any gun kept in the RV is just something I'd be willing to accept as a loss in case the RV burned. Not gonna keep a Mark 23, P7, Python or Stacatto in it. |

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.
| From the point of a guy who mostly vacations, it kind of depends on the configuration of your rig. We're running a Super C that has 3 slides. We've got a whole wall slide passenger and two slides driver. To bring the bed slide in, we have to "retract" the bed. So once the bed is retracted and the bed slide is in, the space under the bed is 100% inaccessible. If I store some guns under there while we're parked, they're not accessible while we're moving unless someone pushes multiple buttons that are not intuitive to someone stealing from an RV. It's not a safe. But it's a huge PITA for people looking for the easy steal. The long guns go under the bed. The "oh shit" guns are handy as we're going down the road. And they usually go with me into the gas station. |

My grandfather built a couple of hiding places into his travel trailer. He carried a Winchester Trapper in .357, not an AR, but I vaguely remember he'd built two panels under the bed that he'd added some real hardware to so that they looked like they were part of the lift support system that helped raise/hold the master bed in place since most of them have some sort of way to lift the bed for storage underneath. He's been dead for some time now and I can't recall exactly how it was set up. I know he also had a couple of panels that were originally held on with magnets then he changed at least one of them so that you had to slide a magnet along the surface and that slid a bar that held it closed back allowing it to open. It was large enough to put his 4" Colt Trooper in. As noted, most campers and RVs are built as cheaply and light as possible so be careful you don't cut through something you don't want to and you're probably not going to have a lot of room to work with. Also be aware that in some states "hidden compartments" are illegal since the drug warriors think everyone who might want to secure something in their vehicles must surely be a drug dealer  and some of those scanners you have to drive through, i.e. in some ports, can spot items. When I had VW buses, I'd put my guns/laptop/etc in between the top mattress and run a cable through part of the gun and the lift hinge so you'd have to lift the pop top to get to them. I could also put a lock on the latch that released the top. Obviously specific to a pop-top type camper. |

No need for a safe at night. Range is about 6 feet. You can't miss. Full timed in a B for a decade and the only attempted break in was when I foolishly decided to sleep in a hotel for the night in Austin. I've not had a vehicle successfully broken into since the 90's. |

| Instead of a safe, you should consider a gun cabinet. There are some secure options that would do the job, just are not fire rated. |

| Yeah, I had considered some type of "arms locker" instead of a safe. My intended usage is going to shooting matches where I will be carrying multiple guns and ammo, but want to be able to secure the stuff if I go offsite for dinner or a supply run. Right now I am just camping in a cargo trailer, so I am only self sufficient for power, heat and AC. |
