Yeah that was my thought as well.  The troubled kids cycle through the area the house I live in every 4 to 6 years.  Next instead of knocking on house doors they will be walking the neighborhood checking car doors and stealing things.  Hopefully the idea that a stranger was able to track them down and has video footage of them is enough to straighten them up or at least keep them away.  I'm sure the kids will tell their friends about it too.

But now I want more cameras.  Can never have enough.  It's hard to get the perfect angle of the driveway but I'm going to see what I can do.

I’m in the same place with cameras.  The suburb I’m in is fine except for the occasional bored teens.  The problem is the large city I border, which has a lot of problems.  The weekly police blotter is almost always “…a X resident was taken into custody and booked…”

The biggest problems surround areas close to the bus line and Walmart.  They ride the bus in to do their shoplifting or worse.  Second place are the ancient motels along an old highway which predates the interstate.  Drug use, prostitution, and a heaven for the down and out.  Again, rarely anybody from the suburb.  The motels attract problems from everywhere.

I’m close enough to be concerned but far enough that I’ve been slow in adding additional cameras.

That is how my town is as well.  About 10 miles from the 2nd largest town in the state and the thugs have figured out they can come here for easy targets.  Also I live on one of the main roads through town that parallels the interstate.  The "travelers" use this road as they migrate through. Not too many problems with them other than trespassing but the fact they will be near the house or in the yard is concerning.

I think so.  It was younger kid that did it.  Maybe 10 maybe 8, hard to say.  Probably saw it in a movie and thought it would be fun to try.  Ringing the doorbell would have been a smarter choice.

Absolutely.  I heard the buck grunt the night before, knew exactly what it was.  I've had does wander through but never a buck leaving scrapes.

I can't shoot a firearm in town but I believe I could hunt with my bow.  But I would worried he would run 100 yards and die in the front yard of one of the expenses houses behind me.

See that watering hole behind the scrapes (and a shit load of scrapes at that)? That's a regularly visited hole by that buck.

The creek is really close.  That hole is in the bottom of an old pond on the property.  I think they had put a clay liner in it and I dug through it trying to see how much further I could dig the pond down.  That's about the level of the creek water.  I do have a spare trail camera.  I need to move one over that way.

I have a new deterrent in place to hopefully keep the thieves away. Finally finished one of my security camera posts and have a couple cameras on it.  I will add more cameras to it but right now I just wanted to get something in place.  I ended up running overhead lines to it because I need to locate a sewer line in the driveway before I can trench.

I used a 6x6 post and stained it to make blend in better.  Also painted the cameras to help them blend in it.

If you know to look for it you can see it.

Even moving closer it isn't that obvious what it is.

You pretty much have to get right up on it to realize you are being watched and tracked.  The bottom cameras has "AI" tracking for people and can pan/tilt 360 degrees.

Random thought: Have another visible one some ways in front of it.  Ensure the more disguised one has a very clear view.  You may catch people trying to disable the visible one.

If finances are tight, mount fake cameras with battery operated red blinking lights.  That’ll definitely attract attention.

I could see it encouraging alternative entry methods though.

What’s the “rating” (I’m not a computer guy) on your cameras?

There are more cameras planned and purchased already.  Some were bought a year ago and I just haven't gotten around to getting them setup.  The house layout and build makes it difficult to run things to that side of the property.  What I didn't show is have 2 other cameras about 50ft away looking the general direction of the 2 cameras on the pole.  I try to make sure every camera is watched by another camera.

The cameras are Reolink brand, middle of the road China made consumer cameras. I went with that brand because all their cameras now can identify people, animals, and vehicles when it comes to triggering motion recording and logging what is in the recorded file.  The cameras all have micro-SD card slots and can record right to the camera but they provide a desktop and mobile app that lets me watch the cameras live or play back any of the recordings.  The mobile app can receive alerts from the cameras such as when a person is detected.  The apps are free and there is no monthly service charge for being able to live view the cameras or recordings.  They also make NVRs with the same people, animal, and vehicle detection.  I have one of those in the house but use it to record the cameras 24x7.  This allows me to quick check the recordings on the camera but if the motion detection ended and the camera missed something I can go back to the NVR and see what else happened.

The top cameras is a RLC-811A which is an 8MP camera with a 5X zoom.
The bottom camera is TrackMix POE which has 2 lenses, one is a wide view and one is a zoomed view.  The wideview is also 8MP (4K).  Not sure what the zoomed lens is.  The camera is very good a tracking and I have it set off to the side far enough that if someone walks down the driveway and all the way to back door of the house the camera is able to rotate and follow them.

Another camera I have is their CX410 which is a color night vision camera.  It is a 4MP model and they have an 8MP model, which I have but have not installed yet.

This is what my cellphone captures from my roof at night.  It is pretty dark where I park.

This is what the CX410 sees at the exact same time in that level of darkness.  Ignore the mess, it's basically a construction site in that area.

We had several inches of snow, 1/2 of freezing rain, and then 2 more inches of snow.  No brooming that off.  I wish I had the bifacial panels.  That would really increase the output with the snow.

Hopefully due to the winter angle the panels warm up tomorrow and it slides off.  I do have the long handled broom that used to clean them.  To get the top panels I  my tractor out there and stand in the bucket to reach with the broom.

That's cool.  I'm a bit south of you but we haven't had snow in a few years.  Right now they are calling for it Friday, but we'll see if that happens.  It is good you have a method to clean off your panels normally.  I don't have the real ability to get mine cleaned off.  They are out of my reach on my roof.  If it is icy, I'm not climbing up there.  We only get snow here in the Upstate about once every two/three years though.

Just as the previous snow/ice was starting to disappear we get setup with another storm that is supposed to dump 2 more inches.  Anyone trying to go off-grid would need to plan for a way to clean the panels.  Even then the heavy cloud cover the last week means almost no solar production.

There are 2 foxes that come out.  One is older and larger and one looks like an offspring from last year.  The older one doesn't really respond to any names that I call out, so I'm not sure which one it is.  It is familiar with me tossing hotdogs out for them though.  The smaller one, the first time I threw a hotdog towards it ran away as fast as it could.  The older one stays back, 50 to 75 ft.  The smaller one stays back around 100 ft.  I haven't spent as much time in the yard feeding them as I did with the original fox.

This is the best picture that I can get at moment.  It's from a security camera about 50 ft away.

@Kitties-with-Sigs  Let me know where I can send you some of my tomato seeds.

I started the prep work on my walnut soil garden.  I put about 40 gallons of walnuts on the patch last fall.  Squirrels took some of them but still the soil is loaded with the walnuts, the hulls, leaves, and branches.  There are also 2 small walnut trees growing now, one right in the middle of the garden.

This is the walnut soil area.

Still tons of walnuts visible and the stick sticking up towards the front is a walnut tree.

You should be starting to the feel for what I mean by "walnut soil".

Kitties-with-Sigs if someone showed you an area like this and said they were going to grow tomatoes, what would your response be?

Everything tilled in

The walnuts are still there, just tilled in.

I left the small walnut tree and the walnuts around it.  I will plant something about 6 inches away from the trunk and in the root zone to maximize the juglone exposure.

I've been following and enjoying your updates.

Thinking about your solar build, have you thought about putting your panels (some at least) on a tracking solar mount?  Seems like you have a small footprint to work with and a tracking mount might really help your production year round.

\I built the mount for my panels to be tilt adjustable.  I adjust the tilt 2 to 4 times a year manually.  Tracking requires a special mount, computer, motors....etc.  With peak solar coming for only a couple hours in the middle of the day, tracking doesn't improve output that much. A dual axis tracker is the best but most expensive, increasing output 30%-40%.  A single axis tracker is 20%-30%.  Those numbers are over a fixed array.

For reference my adjustable tilt can increase my output 10%-15%.  For example my arrays at the end of January.  The array on the right side I left in the late summer/early fall position.  It is running about 10% lower than the array on the right.  The array's weren't drastically different, maybe 10 degrees of angle off.  Winter I run about a 45 degree angle and summer is only 15 degrees from flat.  If I left them summer or winter they would easily bet 20%-30% lower in the opposite season.  But changing them even monthly would barely be worth the effort, 2-3% more/less production changed monthly.  Changing weekly or even hourly would be a waste of effort.

The real reason no one does trackers, especially the dual axis trackers is the cost.  A single axis tracker, fixed tilt but follows the sun during the day, is about 50% more total cost than fixed.  A dual axis is double the cost.  If a fixed array is $12,000 then a single tracker is $18,000 and a dual tracker is $24,000.  A 40% gain for double the price on a depreciating and degrading asset is not a good choice.  You are better off doubling the size of your fixed array.

Your local electricity costs and space available would be a factor.  Where I'm at power is 10 cents a kilowatt.  Some places on the east coast, California, and Hawaii are closer to 50 centers a kilowatt during peak rates.  With power costing 5x as much then a 2x in cost for 40% more output could make sense if you had limited space.

This might help explain it a bit more.  Outside of the noon period the sun is further away and power quickly drops off.  The panels right now start picking up the light around 9 am to 7pm but only from 11am to 3pm is there a high level of production.  Tracking would help, but a 40% increase at 20% of the power production isn't that much.  The top of my chart for that day has a flat spot, I'm already maxing out my equipment.  A tracker would help outside of that but again the gains are limited.

Nice explanation.  Thanks.  I was curious because I've seen where the gain is better but never bothered to do the math on it.  My system is roof mounted so there is no adjusting.

Yes, that's the retaining wall for the bridge that I repaired.  The picture who quoted was taken right after I fixed it.  The wall is holding up.  I'll have to get a better picture of it once the water goes does to normal levels.

This was a picture form the other week as the water was starting to go down.

This is the level of the creek in September/October.  It's become more of a spillway than a creek/spring.  When the weather goes dry the city sucks all the water out of it and when it rains hard the city dumps all the storm water into it.

There is a reason most systems are fixed, they are good enough.  The cost to make them adjustable can rarely be made back.  It's cheaper just to add more panels.  Roof systems are pretty much always fixed any way. The weight is a big factor for roof systems and then wind load.  Tilt the panels and they start to grab the wind more, that vibration would loosen the mounting hardware and cause roof leaks.

@Kitties-with-Sigs

I am starting to see volunteer tomatoes in that walnut soil shown above.

The foxes tonight behind my house.  The size and behavior suggests it is the mother and one of her kits from last year.  Typically the mom would not be tolerating the offspring this far along but seems to have warmed back up to it.

Sorry for being AWOL, and thank you @SWIRE for reaching out.

On briefly just to prove I'm alive.

As to what I'd say about growing walnuts in that soil, I would say, "Good Luck with that."

But you are proving it can be done!

Really beautiful.

I know it's folly but I think I can see Fionna's face shape in that one.

Absolutely you can.  I'm not sure which one that is actually.  It's friendly enough to be the daughter but small enough now to be the granddaughter.   The daughter had thick fur over the winter so it is very hard to tell.  This is the second fox that shows up.  The build make me think it is a male fox but that is just a guess.  Does not look like Fionna at all.

Better lighting for the first fox.

Someone should tell these tomatoes plants they are doing it wrong.  Not only did they germinate in heavy walnut soil, they are growing well, flowered, and not now small tomatoes have formed.  Not only that but it is all happening in the shadow of a 6' tall walnut tree now.

Three foxes!  The third one acts like an offspring but is way to large to be a kit from this year.  It is easily half grown but should only be about 3 months old.  Something doesn't add up.

Clearly an offspring.  Really big for this time of year.

For reference this was the size of the kits July 19th 2022.  The were smaller a month later.

To date this has still been the best video that I have captured.
