Hi all, Just began planning a spring 2022 black bear hunt in SE Alaska. My hunting partner is doing a lot of the permit and location planning and I'm doing transport and equipment. Do you guys think... 1) 7mm mag 2) 30-06 3) .270 would be ethical and smart choices? The 7mm mag is my go-to rifle, the others being the ones my partners like best. I'm a little hesitant on the .270 Any input would be appreciated! |

Any of the three are more than enough for black bear.... the only thing is when I'm in Grizzly/Brown Bear country I don't go below 300 win mag... Dressing out an animal can attract undesirables... living through a bear charge changes your perspective... good luck on the hunt. |

I'd take the '06. It makes sense to take a caliber that is enough to take care of what you don't expect. When I lived there I used to take a .308 black tail hunting in the southeast and Prince William sound, but I always carried a handgun for the big round brown fury things that think a gunshot is a dinner bell. Then I started to bring my .375 H&H, It makes a small round hole on entrance side and a slightly larger round hole on the exit side on deer and is capable of whatever else I needed and I didn't need to carry two guns.  |

I think you will be fine with whatever you feel most confident with. Or, bring a bow. Attached File Canada, last year. Just carry a sidearm for the brownies. |
