For some reason the wild crop of blues,reds,black and salmonberries are almost nonexistent.  There are some salmonberries in certain areas but you have to work at getting enough |

Sorry to hear that. Picking wild berries in Virginia is something I look forward to doing with my family every year from late spring to midsummer. Mulberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries either out in the country or in the suburbs. I hope next year is better for you. |

Nothing quite like plucking wild, free-range blueberries still damp with morning dew on the cruise line first thing in the morning. We had a light winter this last year in commie WA, that said everything was early. Black berries which are generally august into sept are popping already. Bummer up there for you guys as you harvest so much. Curious how the sockeye/pink/king run has been? Hopefully silvers come in big time. |

Reds and chum exceeded escapement. got enough fish dried and smoked to eat conservatively. Will be fishing for silvers first two weeks of August. |

| Apples tree, peach tree, and blueberry bushes hit hard this year with two late heavy frost after an April warm spell. No crop at all from them. Seen a few berries, not many. |

The huckleberries in NW Montana are hit or miss depending on late frost or frost free microclimates. I found an excellent patch only a few miles from home and the three of us picked 2 solid quarts in about 1.5 hours last Sunday. Going again this Sunday and bringing an elderly friend whose normal spots were in a frost zone this year. Attached File Attached File |

Already have rasp (black & red), currant, elder, straw, blue, josta and a ton of grapes. For sure adding honey, cran, black and service berries next spring (or even before winter if I find discounts at the garden centers.) Since you know the area, I was at an undisclosed location somewhere along the slopes of Blacktail Mountain.  Went to scout today for this weekend’s picking and we are definitely past prime but there’s still tons of berries around.

We found a wooded north slope on Sunday with good access where the berries were still pretty good, just not thick with bushes. All the huck plants on the south and west facing slopes are fried. Berries either shriveled or dropped completely with browning plants because of sustained 90+ temps and no rain for several weeks. It was a short “prime” huck season here but there are still some around. Just have to hunt them out. I’m switching focus to firewood. Lots of old growth Larch blowdown up on the NF from a hurricane force storm last December. Attached File |
