We used to start a fire at dusk. we would tie some fishing line with hook to a stick that we drove into the ground, we would take another stick with 2 broken off branches in the shape of a v (for the fishing line to rest in)and drive that into the ground a foot or so from the first stick. Make a small sag in the line between the 2 sticks, and put a bent in half piece of grass or hay on the sagging line. When you see the piece of grass start to jump and wiggle, you have a fish on. Same idea when using a trotline...

| You can experiment with bait. A neighbor when I was a kid used to use a small diameter twine and drop random bait on it. A lot of minnows. He caught things we never used to catch fishing the creek near my house. He left his overnight and checked it in the morning and afternoon. He did once catch a water moccasin and an eel. I used to go with him when I could. He did well every time. |

Just make sure you bait it with something that will stay on.
And make sure you tie it off right, and either anchor it with a shitload of weight if you're not going to the other side, or anchor it to the other side. You don't want the current pulling it downstream. I've used chicken guts, blue gill, stink bait and crawdads. Chicken livers seem to do pretty well - I've even caught a goddamned snake northern on one. He ate the shit out of it, and was definitely not releasable. So I made a fish sandwich out of him. |
