question:

I have kill shots I've made on p-dogs using Nosler BT 50gr rounds, and as expected, the kill shots are fairly...ummm... chunky sounds about right

Are kill shots of that nature ok to be posted in this new forum ?

This is the first fox I have ever called in and my second fox I have killed.  This was my very first time using a predator call and I had this guy run right to me and a friend.  Both got a shot and both hit. I got the kill shot with 4 pellets to the head. He got a body shot

This is the first fox I have ever shot.  She ran right to us while squirrel hunting.  Just like the fox above we both got a shot at her.  I got the body shot and he got 2 pellets into her head.

This is the skull from the above fox.  Pelt was no good she had mange.

Its called Maceration.  Which is basically rotting off the flesh in water until all the meat in gone.  Took me two months to do that skull.

Read this it will tell you more obout maceration www.skullsite.com/misc/macerationmanual.htm

lokltrkr,

I NEVER thought I'd tell a man this, but:

NICE BEAVER!

Our beaver season doesn't open til the 15th. I got permission for the new place I'm doing good on foxes on BECAUSE they wanted someone to get after the beavers.

thats a perty skunk

[#23]
Yeah, thought I'd eat before I start skinning, just in case I slip.
He was real laid back. I got real close, and he never reacted.

Caught an almost black one there last week.He sprayed when I was still 50' away!

[#24]
Do you take the essence from them before you skin them?
Link Posted: 1/24/2008 9:51:39 PM EDT
[#25]
No I don't.Usually don't catch too many skunks, but this has been a good (or is it bad?) year!
I was talking to a guy the other evening who does.
He also removes ALL the glands from his foxes as well (even interdigital, etc!)
Will swing by and check it out when I get a chance.
Link Posted: 1/25/2008 8:19:56 PM EDT
[#26]
harvesting the essence is fairly easy to do and you can get around 10-12.00 per ounce.  each skunk that has not sprayed should yield anywhere from 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce of essence
Link Posted: 1/25/2008 9:30:17 PM EDT
[#27]
Do you remove the essence before you skin?
Or after?
I've also heard of folks simply cutting out scent glands.
For that money, it'll be worth my time, plus I hate to waste ANYTHING (have sold a few skulls, claws, coonbones, etc)

Heck, who knows, I may even target stinkers!
Link Posted: 1/26/2008 10:01:36 AM EDT
[#28]
Definitely before skinning as when you pull the tail you are liable to get a face full.
Link Posted: 1/26/2008 4:14:12 PM EDT
[Last Edit: Dave15] [#29]
After making my initial cuts (ankles to rump) and starting the hide off,I've always cut the tail bone off right at the base, before peeling them, leaving the bone in.
Then, I have the pelt free, with the bone still in the tail.
Then I simply loop the thick base of the tail in the gambrel loop, and strip off the tail.
Sounds strange but took longer to type it then it does to do it.Literally only a few seconds.
I've never had an accidental discharge this way.
(having said that, I'm SURE the next one will get me)

Thanks!

It was a live trap, obviously very easy to use for a first timer.  It was hidden a little better before he got caught and threw a fit A friend of mine has trapped bobcats like that before, so I figured it was good for coons. Now that I've got my first taste, I want to try different kinds of sets.

No Pic but I nailed a coyote last year with a 7mm mag.
Just as a note be sure to put in your ear plugs when hunting.
And we could have used the yote as a can holder.
I normally use a 243 but my nephew need it and I used his dads 7 Mag

Hhmmm.. now that I found this thread I'll have to make sure I take some pics this upcoming season. These are the only two trapping pics I've got saved (I think):

If you look close you can see the 'coon down in there. If I remember correctly, this was my first experiment using a drag instead of staking.

I'll try and remember to take some pics this season. Just never thought about it much before I guess. Didn't really think anyone wanted to see pics of my dead (or soon to be) critters.

I love those pics, very cool. Those traps don't cause any kind of damage, you can just turn them loose and they just go their way?

Just a question, and don't flame me for this

we don't have beavers here in central oregon that cause problems at least, so whats the point in killing a beaver ? what does it do to make it a pest ?

also a Lynx i thought they were very rare? so just curious as well, i'm not trying to be PETA by any means just curious.

No damage with a foothold just  use the right size. Some people think they crush the animals foot.
Most of the time when I walk up to a yote, they are curled up sleeping.

They make dams that flood the land.
