We were doing some fishing for peacock bass in the Fort Lauderdale area, found a reel in the grass. The spool was about 20 feet away from the body, drag cap missing, no rod to be found. Best I can tell, somebody who didn’t know about fishing brought a BIG old Penn out to a little pond, lost the drag cap, tried casting and the spool fell off. And then took the reel off the rod and left it there in the grass. So I cleaned it up in vinegar and stripped all the old line off the spool. It definitely spent some time underwater. But being a gen 2 Spinfisher, it was made between the 70’s and 1992 so who knows how many hurricanes it’s been through. I have it home now, got it completely apart in pieces and I’m degreasing the old 1970’s grease off the gears. I ordered a few new carbon drag washers, a new style levelwind gear and pinion combo, drag cap with seal, and some other small stuff for another reel I have. I love Mystic Parts (formerly Scott’s bait and tackle). I’m going to put it on an old ass 9’ surf rod and spool it up and fish it.    |

In case you couldn’t tell, I have automotive lubricants lol. The drag stack was so salt crusted in, I don’t even know how it was spinning before. Now, it’s smooooth. All of the corrosion on the nail and other chrome/stainless parts was superficial and cleaned off with a pot scrubber. I’m going to have to take it apart again when the new parts show up, but now I know how.
