I didn't notice the calories difference before, but I'm surprised how many more calories are in one pouch of Peak now that you've pointed it out. Midway is my go-to place for freeze-dried too funny enough. |

Peak Refuel tastes better and has more calories. Between the 2 my preference is Peak Refuel but due to the longer shelf life the majority of what I have is Mountain House. 30 years versus 5 years for Peak Refuel. My go to for actual eating while backpacking, versus long term food storage, is Packit Gourmet, Pinnacle Foods, and Turmat Real Meals. @bkpkr, we usually go on our trips in a group of 3, so the higher calorie density is really intriguing... If we could reduce our food pack space by just 25-33% (i.e. having to bring one less meal for breakfast/dinner and supplementing with something else) it would probably be worth it from that standpoint. But I would also be buying both, especially since there's a big difference in shelf-life that Terriblis pointed out. @Terriblis, I estimate that I've already tried around 75% of the mountain house.  (Some of the meals have really improved over the years!) I'll watch those videos later when I have a little more time and I'll check out those other brands as well.Thanks! |
| I personally like Peak better than MH. It all depends on the meal. A couple of years ago I did a test of a few brands by buying the same meal that all of them made and trying them all out. I liked the Peak offering. |

I have a lot of MH on hand and most of them are OK tasting and a few I really like such as the Chicken & Dumplings  but overall the Peak meals taste better to me and are more filling.My absolute favorite doesn't even require you to boil the water first. Good tasting cereal with big pieces of strawberries. I've (finally) had a chance to try some Peak Refuel and I have to say that while I like Mountain House, I'm impressed with Peak! It definitely has a richer taste to it. I think I'll still use Mountain House occasionally (it has a much longer shelf life as previously discussed), but it's hard to beat the calories and taste of the Peak food that I tried. Once again, thank you everyone for taking the time to respond to my question!
