I'm in Delaware and have grown up fishing bluegill, bass, catfish, perch etc but never messed with trout. This July I'm taking the wife and kids up to north west PA in Potter County to a cabin for a week of outdoors and camping. I've had my kids (son 5, daughter 8) bobber fishing for blue gills and perch quite a bit, but from looking into the area it seems most bodies of water our there are mostly trout. Where do I start? I have mainly light and medium spinning rigs and spincasters for the kids. Tackle is mainly bass and bluegill related. I have no problem picking up some new gear but I don't know what I don't know. Please show me the way. |

No one answer. A lot depends on the water you're fishing. Not knowing that, I suggest something like 4 lb Vanish on short ultralight poles. Joe's Flies spinners in various weights (depends on the water). You can get them from Fishusa. You can use powerbait and bounce it along the bottom. But you have to buy small split shot without the tits. Walmart doesn't have them. Spin-e-minys work well too, especially on Brook trout in shallow water. Brooks love minnows. And you can always drift a piece of night crawler. Trout magnets and other jigs under a float work. If you're going to fly fish, that's another ballgame. Trout are either feeding on top or sitting on the bottom. That means you have to run your spinners right on the bottom too and you'll lose some. IDK about PA, but ask the locals where they stock. You can end up fishing water with only a few fish if you don't know. If you have kids with you most guys will point you to a good hole. Just keep in mind that I fish bigger rivers and what works in them won't translate to small streams all that well. |
