the whole retired early at 48 about a year and a half ago , sold our wisconsin homestead , and now living debt free in the ozark mountains. Life is normal! so many projects and I have been so busy. I have also been quite active in our small community too. I know everyone now! big projects like full solar / battery, bunker/storm shelter long complete. Now the smaller projects. So many finally finishing up my wife's office and guest cabin. It will be a dry cabin with compost toilet. Has mini split for temp control. Attached File Every-night is a great sunset I swear  Attached File We are next to national river and forest so recreation is daily Attached File I have a second barndo on my property I have slowly been renovating too. and foraging in the front yard. so this just happened earlier today. I walked out the main house to the detached pantry. As I opened the door I stepped over a black thing and realized it was a snake. I turned around and shut the door as it went by and grabbed my phone to video. I guess it's a rat snake and it eats rodents so it's sill roaming around I think I took some life off myself though   Almost had a heart attack! At least it’s a good one. #snake #scary #offgridliving working on finishing up the guest cabin, and also our second barndo that is being used as a warehouse. It was light rain all day so we took it easy most of the day. I'll post some more photos of the property and this week. I'll start with our solar system. |

UPDATE so I sell locally surplus and outdoor gear as my retirement side hustle. I have huge amounts and now I have even more. I just bought a huge amount of surplus from various wholesaler and a shop closing down. I am making my 2nd building a shop-able warehouse  Photos soon! |

then one of my rains barrels showed the leak that I could not find. (fixed it with gorilla tape) Attached File and I play bushcraft on the property all the time still Attached File sorry some of the photos are really cropped. Not sure whey I always hit file size limits and can only post so many photos per post. Oh well |

We tried getting a shop cat and she skedaddled even though we followed the barn cat rescue's protocol |

Attached File so the gas filler broke and had a hole in it triggering a dash light, and had to replace. Attached File cleaned and painted frame. When to start up and the shifter linkage broke due to rust! So did a lot of hiking to decompress! Attached File |

Best I could do as I tried to minimize secondary, downstream kills as much as possible. They worked really fast but I had to buy a big bucket of them. The price was great for what I got. They smell like peanut butter. I put out six bait stations for about half of my 1.5 acre property. (This was the hole-digging Norway rats.) I should have put out more based on the protocols but the six seemed to do that job. Cats are a good solution but they are absolutely individuals. One might not like your setup and another might take right to it. Gotta get the baits out before you try more cats though. I have noticed over years of doing cat rescue and observing them on my own place, that if an infestation is heavy, you need more than one cat. They work in teams. People don't realize it because they don't spend a lot of time watching cats. I've seen teams of two, three and four work together before. They will actually flush the rodents forward to the waiting kill crew. They take turns with the assignments. Some cats are good mousers, others are not. Some will work as a team and others are longers. They're as much individuals as people are. All that to say, the rats multiply so fast that it takes more than one cat by the time you have a problem. |
