Dinner options for tonight. Or ramen and pretzels. View from the cabin I rented for the night. Attached File Attached File Norwegian Artic Field Ration had a best buy date of May 2026 so went with it. Attached File The components had late 2022 manufacture dates. Attached File Attached File The freeze dried main had a best buy date of 2029. I used a bit less water than was recommended as I didn't want a sauce. Attached File The peach flavored drink is excellent. Not too sweet and has a strong peach taste. Attached File I moved the party indoors as the chipmunks were forming up for wave tactics. The tikka masala rehydrated well. Even going lite on the water, the chicken wasn't rubbery. Slightly spicy curry and ginger taste. Attached File Peanuts were some of the best I've had. The beef jerky was dry. European MRE jerky tends to be dry. However, this was probably age related as I've had the same brand in newer rations and it is comparable to Jack Links. The stuff in the Danish rations has the consistency of shredded cardboard. Skipping the coffee for tonight. Overall a very good ration. The Turmat freeze dried meals are always good. Better than Mountain House. But only have a 7 year shelf life instead of 30. |

I keep MRE’s for just this reason. I can pop an MRE main entree in a heater while I am getting into dry warm clothes and immediately get something warm inside me and once I’ve done that I can then take the time if I choose and fire up my stove and make something additional like soup or cook a real meal all while shacking on the sides that come with it. I have ridden out a couple of blizzards/snow storms/road closures this way. I’ve even helped out a couple of families who were poorly prepared. A few years back I was headed out to Grand Junction for work when there was a multi hour road closure near Copper Mountain and. I way to exit or turn back. There was a mom with two kids in the car next to me and he kids were really acting up. Since we were all out of our rides just standing f and chatting I found out she had left home with nothing but a single bottle of water for each and just one small snack each. I got in the back of my Expedition, and opened the case of water I always have in there and gave her 9 bottles along with some drink powder. I also dug out some MRE snacks I keep in my kit so they all had something to snack on. Sometimes it’s not just about helping yourself. She asked a lot of good question and said she was stopping g at the Walmart in Glenwood Springs to put a travel kit together. |

I ride motorcycles in the back country fairly often, a stripped down MRE doesn't take up much room in one of my bags but If for some reason I have to spend an unplanned overnight it can be a welcomed meal and calories. You can eat them hot or cold and you don't need water or a stove to prepare them. Water out here is pretty scarce and what you do find may need heavy filtering to be usable so having a meal I don't have to hydrate is a bonus. I disagree with your claim that they are a terrible emergency ration, to me for the reasons I pointed out they make a good emergency ration. |
