Know almost nothing about IR or night vision. Guys around here have been hunting with them for years and but I was wondering what is the current entry price for something that isn't a toy. Minimum capability would be 150 yards being able to identify a cow vs a pig with 100% certainty. |

Digital Night Vision will do that for about $500, maybe another $100 or so for an upgraded IR illuminator. Thermal will be about twice that, $1,000 or so. Get resolution 256x192 or higher. Those are bare minimum prices. Obviously the more you spend the better the quality, higher resolution, more features you get. The digital night vision has some disadvantages in thick cover, tall grass, and any branches in between you and the target. The IR light splashes back washing out your image and you can't see anything. |

I don't know anything about thermal since they have a high cost to entry. Maybe there are ok cheaper options, but all I've seen have been $1500+. Digital night vision, while it takes some time to get used to the delay, it does work. Sightmark Wraith is a good choice. Price on that is $400-$500 new. I'm unsure on the used market. |
