So I've been bouncing back and forth about which new scope to get. I have a Weatherby Mk V Bronze Hunter in .270 Wby. Right now it has a Viper HS 2.5-10x on it and shoots under MOA. I'd like to put a better quality scope on it. I've been torn between a NF SHV 3-10x with the MOAR or a Z3 3-10x with a BHR reticle. I don't plan on dialing. This is to be a do-it-all rifle for hunting in AZ. Longest anticipated shot will be under 500 yards. My budget is $1000 and under. |

You say you dont plan on dialing. Are you planning on using the reticle instead of dialing? If that is the case would a FFP work best for you? I am still trying to see how other people use optics, reticles and dials on their hunting setups. For me I tend to dial but I can see merit in using holds on a reticle with one exception. Hunting I am not always at max mag and a SFP could be tricky to figure holds. On my FFP scopes reticles on low power are sometimes smaller than ideal. But everything has its trade offs. Just trying to see what your plan is. I really like my VX5HD 2-10 firedot. But you would need to dial that one. If you dont want illumination I think they make a few non illuminated reticles that have some holds on them. If I wasnt going to be in timber at all the VX5HD 3-15 is probably about ideal. I probably would have been better off with that one. |

I probably would have been better off with that one. There is always the concern about the hold-overs not being right unless at full magnification. I get around this by sighting in my rifle at 200 yards. With my loads, it's not droping much more than 5 inches at 300 yards. So for anything under that I'm holding on the crosshair. Past that I just have to remember to crank the magnification up. |

So after a bunch of research I decided to go with the Swarovski. And, of course, in the end all that research turned out to be pointless. A friend offered me an older, like new, NF NXS 3.5-15x.  It's heavier, but it's a NF. Attached File |

I don't dial on big game rifles either... There really isnt a need with a 200 yard zero. If it's at 100 yards, impact is going to be two inches high. 300 yards, and it's 8-9 inches low. Works with anything from a 243 thru 270 up to a traditional mag. No fuss. Simple. Effective In all honesty, it's hard to beat a basic Leupold VX3 for the money. And it's entirely adequate for any sub 500 shooting, and I VERY much appreciate the fact they are substantially lighter than many ( especially vortex). 3.5-10, or 4.5-14. Take your pic. Many now come with the CDS, but it locks, stays out, and you don't have to use it .... |
