Tom was chilling with some steaks and beer that Saturday afternoon. Wife, kids all on a road trip and not expected back until next weekend. The phone buzzed in his pocket. Huh. His childhood best friend was calling. Hadn’t heard from him in years. Hello? Turns out he was in town a few minutes out and needed a place to stay. Sure. Continuing with the grilling and watching the road. Up squeals a dirty pickup truck with… bullet holes noticeably along its bed on one side. Friend jumps straight into the pitch. Bad guys coming, sorry but no other option. Need to either make last stand or need safe passage into national forest that’s behind the house. 911 not an option. He has information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of Hillary Clinton. Boys en route may not have eyes in sky but are at least excellent infantrymen. 5 minutes out. Do you go with him or watch him die on your front lawn? If you go… you have 4 minutes to grab your stuff and drive across your yard into the national forest. 20 miles of forested mountains. If you can survive for 2 weeks his dead man’s switch media blitz will kick in. |

Option 1: watch friend die with no guarantee the hit squad won’t kill me too and make it look like a murder suicide. Option 2: stand and fight potentially 12 guys armed with the best weapons, armor and optics. Option 3: grab whatever you happen to have and run for it… ditch truck and go on foot/mountain bike evasion mode. Right now… personally… I have a 90L pack pre packed for an Elk hunting trip and a large rubber maid bin with extra food, camp supplies for elk camp. Only ready firearm is side arm, PCC in range bag and a 12 ga. Pump with bandolier sling with 16 shells (slugs and OO buck). But against modern Ranger/Delta trained guys? Maybe only keep sidearm and PCC and zero long guns… |

I love how the same people who fully believe they could survive and win in this scenario also believe that any successful mass shooter or attempted assassin "must have had help from the deep state." Back to the question at hand: taking a stand would be suicidal. Staying at home and uninvolved is also likely suicidal, as your "friend" already made sure I was "involved." Best bet is probably retreat to the wilderness, but in all likelihood you're just delaying the inevitable. One helicopter or UAS with FLIR (or whatever they have now that's better) will end you from a mile away, and you'll never even know the were there. |

| I’ve played around with LiDAR and FLIR. So long as you stay well under the pine canopy you should be fine… but with guys on foot on your back trail, a 2-3 minute head start from a trail head doesn’t give you more than a mile separation. I’d be running off trail, uphill, generally in whatever direction looks least comfortable… looking for ravines or other places to hole up and go quiet. Turtle up… and hope the posse moves away. If I had the presence of mind I might leave a note in his truck saying “going to X location” ( that’s the opposite direction from where I actually go) it’s a simple ruse that just might work if they don’t see us. Water would be a problem more than food. |

Tom hesitated for a long moment… then decided to help his friend out. Ran into his house, grabbed his range bag, grabbed his Elk pack and… paused at the back door. There was a 4th of July Roman candle “artillery pack” brick of 36 mortars. He quickly tossed his pack into the bed, range bag into the cab and asked his buddy how far behind they are. “Any time now”. So he lit the fuse, dropped the artillery pack on the driveway and gunned his buddies pickup truck into the hills…. |

As the mortars started popping off two black suburbans pulled up in the driveway. Several dismounted men stepped from the tree line, having already dismounted previously. Converging on the house they ignored the fire works. Quickly searching the house, the lead suburban gunned down the trail and followed the tire tracks into the woods. Tom knew that he probably wouldn’t make it far, but a thought occurred to him. “Bail out at the next curve!” Slowed to a crawl he tossed his gear out, set the truck in motion with a hammer on the gas and jumped. The truck rolled on down a straight two track slightly down hill. Tom grabbed his gear and he and his friend scrambled into the nearest thicket. Diving into a hole next to a fallen tree root bulb. Seconds later the first Suburban’s engine came into earshot. Soon 3 more engines passed. Then silence. They counted to 5 and sprinted across the road and then off to the left shoulder, parallel with it and headed back toward the house. A new idea… get back home. Call the fire department. |

| After a hundred yards Tom dropped his 90 L pack in a slight depression and started to jog. His friend paused and asked him to stop. “Look” he panted, no sense both of us dying…. And unceremoniously he handed Tom a flash drive. “Everything is on this…” before Tom could react, he stepped back towards the road. Planning to surrender… |

So why get me involved… thoughts racing, Tom feels naked and vulnerable. But he concludes: fool just got us both killed. He unslung his PCC, charged it, and grabbed all the loaded 33 round magazines to stuff in his pockets. 4 suburbans. Possibly 16 super soldiers… it’s suicidal to engage, suicidal to stay still… A shot rings out and he sees his friend crumple into the ground. 3 shadows step out of the woods on the edge of the two track, 30 yards away. Tom is peering through branches of the log he’s behind. Slow motion… they all look to have short barreled rifles and plates. But 30 yards… no cops would just execute a man who was surrendering… before he knew it he snapped off 3 shots in succession, head shots… all three drop. Oh crap. It’s a gun fight. |

Run, freeze, or advance? He steps forward, it looks like all 4 bodies are dead. Then he sprints to the nearest. Definitely dead. Scoops up his rifle. It’s a tricked out…. Something. Looks at the caliber: 6.8spc. Huh. So not 300 blackout. He doesn’t remember the supersonic crack. Glance. Next guy has a different rifle. Quickly grabs it. 300 blackout. That was the killer. Silence. Goosebumps. Quickly rolls over one assassin. Radio. Ear buds, listens. Gibberish. Or code? No time. Quick scan into woods. Fires off whole mag of 6.8 waist high, measured shots, blind into the woods. Reload, fire again. 30 rounds. Reload… no other mags visible. Scoots back to 300 blackout, next guy, some sort of 556. Grab third rifle, more mags, crab walk back towards log… |

Hesitates. Retreat? Or offensive? He burrows into the leaves and counts to twenty. Slowing his breathing. He faintly hears rustling from his flanks. Too far away to see. Of the two he needs to go left to get back home. Right takes him back up the two track towards the suburbans. Ten more seconds. He doesn’t move. Just when the tension gets too much he hears the crunch of boots on gravel from his left. Ever so slightly he peeks out. A shimmer in the air… he is mesmerized. He sees three faint shadows and a blurry translucent outline of passing troopers. They are scanning the fallen. No rustling on his right. |

Sweating and shaking he feels like time has slowed down. He knows he has seconds to live but feels oddly dissociated from his own actions. He ever so slightly raises the borrowed rifle, and, because he can, flipped the fun switch to burst… and sweeps the shadows without raising his head from the leaves. Left to right “rip, rip, rip” firing 3 round bursts and continuing off to his right, into the woods. Counter fire erupts from different directions and the ground and trees around him begin to disintegrate as angry bees scream past his head. Then silence. |
