Those are early "SmartCraft" gauges and need a CAN (Control Area Network) harness and junction box. This link shows a newer version of SmartCraft gauges, junction box and harness. SmartCraft harness I think I may have a Mercury Technician Guide for the early SmartCraft system around here somewhere. Older SC gauges have the "eyebrows" just above the rubber pushbuttons under the lens. ETA -- Here are some pics of a Verado SC install I did for the Sheriff's office Lake Patrol. They opted to keep the analog gauges hence the Analog Gauge Interface box. The CAN junction box is to the left of the AGI. Overlook the rats nest of wiring the Sherriff's guys put in there above my SC/DTS install.    There are different versions of SC systems so you have to make sure you get the correct cabling or it won't work. I'll hunt around for that guide, also try looking for a SC rigging guide for the older SC stuff. |

Ok. The round 8 pin harness will go to the ignition switch, trim switch (wire pigtails) alarm buzzer (another pigtail) and the trim sender (pigtail) if it's an analog unit. I see you have the boat harness 84-17179a1. The SC gauges will need the CAN cable to go from the engine to the junction box. The gauges will also connect to the junction box using the cables you got with the kit. Main CAN cable is not included in the gauge kits because of length. No use sending a 50ft cable to be used in a 25ft boat. More in a bit...dinner time.

Looking at manuals online now. Another.. This may help also..  Sure wish our shop still had all the factory manuals.

You will need the "a" cable in the diagram above for the SC gauges/junction box. The boat harness (8 pin) will follow normal marine wiring color code.  Other colors are brand specific, like the tan/blue stripe wire is for the alarm buzzer on a Merc. The red, green and blue pigtail wires are for power trim. Red is the 12v feed to the trim switch, the green is the trim down wire and the blue is trim up wire. |
