I am going Elk hunting this November. My rifle of choice will be a 300 PRC, my backup rifle is a 6.5 PRC. That being said I would feel perfectly comfy with a .308, 30-06, 6.5 CM or if hunting the forested areas a 30-30 or 350 Legend. Your mileage might vary. |

Sorry to drag up an old thread, wanted to give you guys some closure and thank you for all the input. I ended up buying a Ruger American gen 2 predator for 450 bucks. Chambered in 6.5 Creedmore. In an earlier post someone mentioned the 35 Whelen as a good elk rifle. It is a great elk round. Another good option with plenty of ammo availability is Tue 9.3x62 Mauser. I have dumped several with wick clean kills with it 286 gr spritzer bullets and it’s good out to 300 in a pinch. I have two of them and one is likely going to Africa next trip. |

7 mm-08 will kill everything you listed and perform out to 400 yards with the right load. I have killed 4 elk, 2 with a 7 mm-08 and 2 with a 7 rem mag. I have had to shoot one twice with the 7 rem mag due to my bad shooting. The 7 mm-08 elk both had better shot placement as recoil is easier and in turn the elk went down a lot cleaner. |

The 308 or 3006 can do what you ask.. but, they're kinda boring and vanilla.... Another very viable vanilla option is 7mm Rem Mag. I'm NOT a big fan of 7PRC. I've seen too many instances of 7PRC actual performance failing to even come close to Hornady's advertising bullshit.. I know others love it, but I think is a Snake Oil marketing product more than revolutionary cartridge. The 6.5PRC comes closer to delivering on its promises. No issues. My fave is 280 Ackley Imp. I'm using it in a Cooper 54, and I get Nosler 160 Partitions to an average 3003 fps at just under max nosler data load. I love the Ackley and 7mm bullets. But if I'm 100% honest, other than a certain amount of panache, my rifle doesn't do a single damn thing that a Tikka in 7mm Rem Mag could do just as easily with less fuss. Yeah, a 300 mag of some sort has more everything. Including more recoil. With the 400 yard limit ( congratulations on being smart and practical on that btw!), the big mags are offering any real advantage over a non mag cartridge. |

The .30-06 is the exciting answer, there are so many choices of loads and bullets for every occasion. There are lightweight varmint bullets, there are medium weight deer bullets and there are heavyweight bullets for elk and grizzly bear. And you get all of this for moderate recoil in a reasonable sized rifle. The caliber is accurate and deadly for any North American game. You can find ammo everywhere and you can find so many used guns. While some may find the latest and greatest super magnum much more exciting, they can't kill game any deader than the .30-06. |

There is much wisdom here. I own a crap load of hunting rifles from 243 up through 470 NE and at last tally I am somewhere around 150ish head if big game taken in Tue US and Africa. I have killed more animals with a 30/06 thanks all the rest of my rifles combined. It is just about the easiest cartridge to support and probably the most versatile as well. It’s boring and accurate and reliable and versatile. |

.350 Remington Magnum, the world’s first ‘short magnum.’ In 22” barrels, you can find the .350RM chambered in the Remmy model 673 (laminated stock) or the Ruger M77 (wood & synthetic stocks).
