Have a Troy bilt 27 ton log splitter that has been awesome for 16 or more years. Last two times using it, last weekend and just a bit ago today, it was struggling with some big logs. It wouldn't split them- wood types it would split before. Usually when it would experience a tough piece it would hit it, makes a clank clank type sound and slowly start working it's way through the log. Today and last weekend, it got to that point (minus the clank clank) and stopped, and I noticed while continuing to hold the handle down a high pitched hissing sound happened. The sound would stop immediately upon releasing the handle. Fluid levels were fine. I changed the filter today and topped off the fluids a bit more. Let it run for a bit before I put it into use and then it did the same thing, along with the hissing and wasn't able to split several rounds. Think maybe the hydraulic pump is going? Filter had clean fluid in it when I changed it, no residual crap or metal shavings, etc. |

Not seeing any spilled hydra anywhere. What is bypass? You mean going back to the tank? How is that dealt with? |

Wouldn't I see leaking fluid if a seal was gone? Thought maybe it was air in the hydraulic cylinder, looked that up and it said to run the hydraulic completely up and completely down 12 times in a row to clear air. I did and put that same round back on there and it did the same thing. |

If the ram seal is good, no leak But if the internal seal[s] on the piston rod fail, its fluid blow by & causes low pressure. Same with the pump, internal seal[s] fail, causes blow by & low pressure. |

If you do replace seals, take a lot of pics of everything throughout disassembly, So when you reassemble you look at pic so you install seals correctly. Rams & pumps have multiple seals & some have a slight semi cone that will install either direction, but you install them in the wrong direction it will leak like a sieve. Which is why you take pics before & during disassembly. |

It mentioned a bleeder valve for air, I searched high and low on the cylinder and couldn't find one, any idea where this might have been placed? The 12 times fully up and fully down thing did not clear it if it is air related. |

Bleeder valve. idk if all splitters got a visable one. the small splitter I got, the "valve" is at the top left end of the fluid reservoir. It's approx 1 1/4" 3/16 bolt with wing nut head, it has deep groove milled length, unscrew it to open while splitting, close it back when done. Other ones seen are small bolt head or allen set screw. |
