I have an opportunity to pickup a diesel fast response generator out of a municipal building that has around 1000 hours. The gen set has been kept inside and had scheduled maintenance done, it is in nice shape and fires right up. It is currently setup for single phase power and in testing the output everything looks good. This is a 25kw model with a John Deere engine and is liquid cooled. Has anyone used one of these for home backup? I just went through an ice storm a month back and didn't have power for two weeks. During that time, I used a smaller genset but it would be nice to have one that could power everything as needed. Diesel would work well since it stores well and I can cycle it through the tractor as well. |
| I'd say at 75% load, one would use about a gallon and a half an hour. If it varies between 50% and 75% load[probably pretty realistic for most houses] then I'd say about a gallon and a quarter an hour would be a fair estimate. Full all in 25KVA output would push it to about 2-2 1/2 gallons an hour or a bit more. |

I have a smaller generator that could be used at night. For the price this seemed like a good deal and I don't have frequent power outages here, the longest prior to this point was like three days. In regards to fuel consumption, the manual shows 2.1 gph at 100%, 1.5 gph at 75%, 1.3 gph at 50%, and 1 gph at 25%. |
