This stand started out under adverse conditions. First, I had a big bear in the field next to me less than 100 yds. away, so I had to keep an eye on him. Then as I was setting up my tripod, I realized that I didn't have the adapter on the tripod to go from Swiss Arca to Picatinny rail. It was over a half mile ride back to the truck so I just had to improvise by setting the rifle on the tripod and doing the best I could to balance it. I also had to make this stand while standing rather than seated because the ditch banks were so high. I soon had a response telling me to get out of their field. We argued back and forth for a few minutes. I could see one coyote in the field, but he was reluctant to break loose. Finally, after fight sounds and vocals, I gave him a rabbit sound that broke him loose to let me know I wasn't going to steal his rabbit without a fight. He came straight down the field intending to swing past the call to catch the scent of this interloper on the downwind. I stopped him before he reached the downwind and made the "shaky shot" at 85 yds. The bear had finally decided to leave the field with all that coyote howling going on and I killed the really big male coyote almost exactly where the bear had been. I managed to overcome the obstacles and end it with a successful stand. I didn't call any longer and just got on out of there since I had already heard other coyotes responding. | Thanks guys, and yeah bears are a problem here until it gets really cold, but bear season has opened now so that will keep them in the woods more rather than in the fields. Mostly they just want to eat scrap corn and be left alone, but a carnivorous animal that big and close to you can't really be trusted. |
