Meat guy, I take the first mature Buck that I see due to time constraints with 3 kids and a wife who hunt as well. Funny story honestly. Local farm grants permission slips to hunt on their land. I was out 30 min before legal time setup for a morning hunt. 20 min after legal time a turbo hunter struts out into the middle of the field, bust the deer away and asks me if I have permission to be there. No, he wasn't the landowner, just another guy with permission seemingly upset with having someone else in the field. I tell him it's all good, even better, I tell him where the Whitetail been coming out, and what time, told him this is a phenominal spot, and since he is so stressed out about getting a deer, I'll leave it all to him. I told him to contact me after. He tags out and I'll return them. I leave, drive 3 miles on my way home then stopped to check a field on my hunting route home, walking a couple hunder yards away from where I park my truck (*for you Tree-Hugger*) and see this behemoth standing 542 yards away in the middle of a plowed field. Attached File Hit him in the boiler room with my trusty 260. 10 MOA of come-uppins with .25 left windage for a little spin. Hard to get a solid range and get kestrel data quickly when your heart is beating so hard. Luckily at this distance he was blissfully unaware of me. He weights 261 Lbs in a state calibrated game station scale.... dressed. Puts this brute over 300lbs live weight. Attached File Attached File Even on back the truck he looked like a freak deer. Attached File I've never put in for state records, not sure how that process works or if it's even worth it. But I can't remember the last time I saw a Buck this big around here. |

Since my first question went unanswered, Whose property did you road hunt? Reason I ask is I battle road hunters daily during deer season. I’ve got 100 acres home out a county gravel road. Last year I put up trail cams for evidence the game warden could use. This year its mostly nighttime poaching my fields. |

A deer like that gives the Game Wardens wet dreams investigating them. It’s not ‘right’ but happen often. Or maybe Maine has reasonable Game Wardens. I think it was last year, the WVDNR did a full forensic and went all the way to N.C. for the hunter. Believe it was called the WV Graveyard buck. I’m looking forwards to the magazine article. I can say that guy thinks I’m a dickhead. Congrats again. |

Comparing a known city dwelling buck that was obviously taken illegally(I believe there was 0 hunting of any kind allowed where that buck was) to a deer that was taken in the wild, whether in a field or from the side of a road is quite a stretch even for the biggest FUDD. I bet you're a lot of fun at parties.

It's obvious you have had some very bad experiences that have developed some bias. I understand. This sounds a little whimsical, but in this neck of the woods in Maine anyways, behaviors you are describing both personal and legally are rare to say the least. Land managers were thrilled. The actual Farm co-owner contacted me to wish co graduations. Gane Wardens here in Aroostook County are pretty kick ass as long as you follow the IFW laws. I've never had an issue nor has my family/circle. It's all good, sir! Thanks for the heads up and tips. |
