Yup, my days of using open sights in the woods for hunting are over.

The only pic of my Massachusetts hunting "rifle" I have on my phone. Savage 220. It identifies as a rifle.

Western hunters who don't use glass (non muzzleloader and archery of course) don't have much luck. Ethical shots at 500 yds or more with open sights is just not possible

Shots here (central Ky hills) rarely reach 100 yds. Until very recently, I was very poor, so my rifles above reflect that. I just got used to them and rather enjoy it.

Pic thread, even though I haven't hunted with it yet.

That certainly isn't the norm for western hunting but damn that was fun.

Sounds like it! Especially on antelope! My closest shot on an elk has been 121 yds

Put this all together tonight. Nothing special. Cut 2" off the barrel of a Stevens 200, put a bigger bolt handle on it, and put a brand new Vortex Viper 3-9 in a DNZ Gamereaper. Medium Harris bipod.

I had it reblued, crowned, AR15 extractor with dual ejectors, Timney trigger, jewelled bolt, limbsaver pad& pos vortex. Hes going to be using on this years local deer hunt & elk in idaho . I doubt it will ever become his primary hunting rifle, but it will get another 70 years of use in our family.
