I have some game cameras up and have seen a decent number of black bears. One seemed quite large and then a few days later saw what looked like the same bear with cubs. While legal, I want to avoid shooting a sow with cubs. We can start baiting September 1rst when the season opens here in NH. Have you ever seen a sow feeding at a bait station and then cubs showed up? I’m just trying to see if there is any tell other than waiting x number of minutes to see if cubs show up. |

The only thing I can tell you is by my own experience in north Maine woods. I have about 25 cams up on my property. By mid summer, I see cubs and sows pretty care free and sometimes quite a distance apart. Once folks start baiting here (I think its August 1), she tightens up on them again. I'd guess baits bring in males and males will kill cubs. I see this almost every year, but I also have a couple bait sites of a neighbor right near my property line where I see them most this time of year. |

Baiting in NH starts on 09/01/25 which is also the first day of bear hunting. I have cameras up on game trails now and I’m not seeing a lot of bear but the ones I do see are heading right into large cornfields, but they have multiple avenues of approach so I’m not seeing everything going in there. So they are “baited” in terms of natural crops. I am hunting my friend’s land that he manages for deer and he is not interested in eating bear so it works out perfectly. He does want the bear hunted so he will bait starting 9/1. It’s not illegal to kill sows with cubs, I just don’t want to! |
