| HPG is a classic, but the chest rig format didn't really work for me—felt a bit restrictive. I switched to a waist/leg drop setup; feels like more freedom of movement and quicker access to gear. Plus, it's a lot friendlier on the budget than $120. Something like this: Tactical waist leg bag. |
| I've used a HPG chest rig for years now. It's a good way to carry a handgun without worrying the sheep you pass on a trail. I use mine for carrying my first line medical gear |

5.11 had their chest packs on clearance for $19 and $25 for the bigger ones. I sold my hill people gear one on eBay for a lot and replaced with he 5.11. I really like the 5.11 one as it has air-mesh against the chest and it's smaller in width so fit me better. Lighter material so not as durable long term but I bought a couple for a fraction of the hill people price. I have the utility one and the survival one is just the CCW pouch. The utility one has a lot more storage. Just looked and some limited colors are on sale still. They even have woodland on clearance Attached File |

I went to a 5.11 store and was able to check out most of their models. Imo the double pocket model should be avoided, the organization part of the front one is super bulky. I also didn't want the front slip pocket as it seemed like it could get damaged easily and I thought things could fall out too easily. I ended up buying the discounted woodland model with only the gun pocket and front molle for 20 bucks and the same thing with the front zipper pocket and front molle at the full price, $60. The downside to the front zipper pocket is stuff in it pushes into the gun pocket, a minimalist wallet and a SAK is very noticeable; in hindsight I should have just bought two of the other model. A Glock 17 seems about the max size and the gun pocket isn't that deep, I don't think an IWB holster with a velcro adapter will work so you're stuck with a dedicated velcro holster, a trigger guard tie down or that magnetic trigger guard. I want to get a triple mag insert to try it out as a chest rig, BFG has an elastic insert with velcro only on the back for about 30 bucks. I've been compiling a list of velcro adapters that you can clip a regular IWB holster into, I think that's the way to go if it fits in your bag to minimize unholstering and reholstering a loaded gun. I got the 5.11 bag in a few weeks ago, but too busy to do much more than finger and fit it. The underside stretchy tube and straps holds the smaller Grayl purifier perfectly. I completely forgot my Crossbreed order and both showed up. One for my G43 and one for a P365/X/XL with TLR7 Sub. They're very well made and either will fit perfectly in the 5.11 bag. Material-wise, it seems less robust than the HPG Kit Bags, but it's not bad and I would say it's a little lighter for backpacking use.
