My father has a coyote problem that we need to take care of. Being in TN, we can hunt them at night, but are limited to using a shotgun. I have a Beretta 12 ga with a trulock predator choke that patterns great with 4 buck and BB out to 55 yards or so. I went out a few nights ago with my NV setup and quickly discovered you need thermal to hunt them at night. I’m thinking a thermal monocular is a must for scanning. I’m looking at a 600 res unit. Would it be possible to use the thermal until they were in range and then use a red spotlight to light them up, or will they spook? I can buy a dedicated thermal scope if it’s necessary? If going the thermal optic route, is a 256 res scope enough, given the use of a fairly high resolution monocular and the fact that shots are going to be limited to 60 yards or closer? |

I am a big fan in getting a very good scanner, but this is because night time coyote hunting is my job. I actually have a 1024 resolution scanner and shoot with 640. Yes, a person can kill coyotes with red light, white light, nv, thermal and thermal ranging from 160 resolution to 1280, etc. With 384, most of the time you can tell between a coyote and fox or potentially farm dog. Every resolution at or above 640 decreases your odds of miss IDing the animal. Honestly, if a person is trying to get rid of a temporary problem, I usually recommend they go to their local sporting good store and ask for the most accomplished coyote killer in the area. Why spend 5-10K on something you may do a few times at most and not be good at it, and educate the coyotes in the area making it harder to kill them. If you plan on hunting coyotes a lot, that is a totally different situation. I am getting really close to the 1500 coyote mark in the last three hunting seasons. I also have worked for a reputable thermal/night vision dealer for the last 5 years, and also have been a product tester for many brands of thermals.
