Bought a 4500 watt generator to use with my camper whenever we camp someplace without power. Manual says to ground it when using it. From what I've read, you need to drive a grounding rod into the ground at least 4', preferably 8'. That's not gonna happen. Any other way to ground it? |

Mechanical lug/ or water pipe coming from the earth. I don't remember grounding a small portable generator below a certain kW, and only for larger gens on commercial work sites. I'm weak in my grounding knowledge. Smarter people will be along soon. ETA - It's the weekend... don't make me look up code. |

The bottom line: When you plug a 3 prong plug or the 240 v plug into your generator and then into the CB box or transfer switch, the third prong is connected to the ground in the breaker box so the generator is grounded. IMO you don't need anything else for a safety ground, it is built in. If you are camping, if you plug a third prong into the generator and power stuff with 3 prong plugs, the same thing, everything is connected to an equipment ground. |
