Some updates are in this post and some are elsewhere in this thread.

I’ve mentioned before that I am a “blue collar to no collar” landlord.  Recently I’ve seen signs of economic stress among my lower-end tenants.  Now I’m seeing welfare boxes returning.  These are boxes of donated food for some of my tenants.  Various social services groups deliver them.  I rarely see them when times are good.  They get common when times get rougher.

And, the same as during the recession, the tenants simply junk whatever they won’t eat.  If it’s healthy or unfamiliar, out it goes.  Thankfully I got the welfare box recipients to put it in the public “free give away” area.  Usually only one or two items get taken, if that.  I leave it for a week to give everybody a fair chance.

It’s especially crazy when the wealthy limousine liberals make the boxes; it looks like they raided a Trader Joe’s or other yuppie boutique grocer for every possible vegetarian, gluten-free, no-cage, free-range, fair trade, organic food imaginable.  And of course, the intended beneficiaries want nothing to do with any of it.  But most months, like this one, it’s stuff from wherever with upside-down labels or small dents.

Before anybody accuses me of “taking” free food away from welfare recipients, this was destined for the dumpster.  The recipients themselves only dumped it on the “free to give away” table instead at my specific request.  I am not encouraging, paying, or giving anything to them in exchange for abandoning their free food.

Here’s what nobody wanted this month:

It’s one way to improve my emergency food stores, and the price (free) was right.

What can you do with this info?

1.  If you have connections in this world, find out if similar welfare boxes get delivered.  If so, what happens to the stuff the recipients don’t want?  Can you get in line for the rejects?

2.  I’ve seen true hunger in Cuba, orchestrated by a government which actively decides which citizens are worthy of food.  It speaks volumes that our “hungry” will just dump around 30 lbs of food.

UPDATE AUG 06, 2024

A couple more boxes got delivered on Sunday.  These weren’t counted above.  The rejects hit the discard table.  Today I caught someone bagging things up.  “There ain’t be no room (left on the free table); I throw this shit out for you Mr. Prebans.”  So I thanked them for their hard work but said that I’ll take it from there.

Here’s what was headed to the dumpster.  If I wasn’t there to let in pest control for nuclear treatment (a tenant who moved out left behind cockroaches ), this would have hit the dumpster without me knowing.

For those keeping score at home, here’s about 10-12 days of rejects destined for the trash.

Even Jewel the Poodle is excited to see this food get saved.

UPDATE AUG 20, 2024

Today I stopped to meet my concrete guy ($$,$$$.$$) at one of the buildings.  So what do my hungry tenants reject and leave languishing unwanted on the table for a full week?

Looks like this week they hit a mid-scale inner-ring suburbs for shopping help and donations.

-“Food Life Balanced” brand Premium White Chicken and Beef Stew;
-“Emmi” brand Fondue (price tag says reduced to $6.24, meaning it was probably $12 before hitting clearance);
-More shelled walnuts plus a Cashew and Macadamia mix;
-Del Monte brand canned goods;
-And more; see photo above.

The peanut butter is an unusual rejection.  But as was explained to me by a passing tenant, “Dat shit ain’t no Skippy, man!”

Lessons for us:

1.  Just like fruits and vegetables, you can return to the same place (plant in your garden, etc.) for more and more.  Don’t stop doing what works after just one time; some golden geese keep on giving!

2.  If dat shit ain’t no Skippy, OUT it goes!  Recognize brand snobs and use them to your advantage whenever possible.

Fascinating observations. Hope you keep posting them.

While there are some poor people who are poor because life dealt them a bad hand, there are FAR more poor people in America who are poor because of bad life choices. Hard to be sympathetic to them.

I’d eat that stuff. Good on you for keeping it from going to waste.

Macaroni and tuna?  That shit's my jam.

I grew up dirt poor and was raised on store brand macaroni and canned tuna.

Same with instant eatmeal.  But only certain flavors like apple cinnamon.

Ha, flavored almonds are my snack.  Love the honey roasted ones.

I don’t eat much pasta but I do on occasion.  If I had kids to feed that’s perfect fare.   We ate a lot of goulash and pasta growing up.   7 kids a slumping seventies economy with Jimmie Carter at work.
The only hyphenated names I like are cartridge names......30-06, 30-40, 38-55 etc.

I grew up poor in the 70's, dad was an appliance repairman for Sears, mom was a medical secretary. I see Kraft Mac and Cheese and Quaker Oats along with some other quality brands. We ate a lot of White Label generic stuff, we could only dream of Kraft Mac and Cheese.

It is being dumped by short sighted people who have never known true need.  I am glad that someone is willing to keep it from going to waste in a landfill.  If there is more than you can use, you can always get a couple of pigs to feed it to.

There isn't a starving third worlder that wouldn't be ecstatic for what are ''poor'' throw away food wise.

Very true, however did you ever wonder why?  The poor gravitate to a high starch diet because simply starch is cheap.  In Krebs Cycle, starch is just a couple notches above sugar which is why they go hand in hand.  It becomes their preferred diet like a sugar addiction.  A sugar addiction is real. I can tell you this first hand.  When I got old I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes and for my health had to pull sugar out of my diet.  All that sugar free shit tasted like shit till I got the sugar out of my system.  Now it's the opposite.  Things I use to love now taste like shit to me.

I had/have a ton of family that is/was in the school system.  They all tell the same story.  When Michelle Obama did her "Let them eat cake" Marie Antonette clueless clone "Let them eat healthy", my family all had the same story.  The free lunch kids who needed a school meal they most, all stopped eating lunch.

A very interesting observation on this is in Pappy Boyington's book "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep."   A Japanese WWII POW one of the ways he survived was he got a job as a kitchen worker.  You can imagine why that helped.   One of his observations was on this topic.  The main diet of the POWs was Japanese Miso which is primarily starch.  He noted those officers from the more affluent classes which were use to a high protein low starch diet were the first to die while those from humble beginnings use to beans and taters had a much better chance of survival.  From my personal experience I can tell you it wasn't so much the what as the transition.

Anyway this is an outstanding topic and why I have long been an advocate of when doing survival food storage we are way better off storing food that matches our current diets. Some EOTWAWKI event that has us living off our larder is not a good time to switch diets.  Those of us who successfully, big word, have, can tell you it isn't easy.

BTW, Since my all time high weight, I have lost 100lbs and went from "Holy shit, I keep gaining weight." to struggling to maintain.

I know why but the fact is, starchy foods alone don't make you fat, third world countries that basically exist on rice for almost every meal proves that. It's because they consume more calories [no matter in what form] then they burn. Simple as that. Peons love their breads, they aren't anywhere as fat as Americans but they are catching up.

Our poor tend to be lazy and fat. There are always exceptions and certain drug usage tends to ''skinnify'' users, but I have been in the public way too long to not know the real truth. Big ol' fat mommas are the norm in public housing.

Some of that I wouldn't purchase because it's name brand and I buy the generics.  If it were free most all of it would end up in my pantry.

If people are giving food like that away they're not hungry.

Seems like many people/poor people don't really have any concept of storing/saving for a rainy day, or even an ability to make logical decisions. I see this in my family, due to my parents moving in with us a few years ago I have stayed in closer contact with my siblings, all have had a hard time over the last few years for various reasons and just seem to continue digging as things get worse, it has been an eye opening experience for me and has made me wonder how much worse things are getting for people in general as time goes by.

Edit to add even basic things like not having a freezer, or extra shelves/room to store things, can have a big influence on life styles. How can you not have a freezer!

Been there, there's a big difference between one bowl of rice a day and 3-4 meals a day.  It's a difference of the poor in an affluent country or a poor country.  Another country with a large welfare class is the UK.  OH Man, talk about fat people.

To agree with your point, at our factory in China, the company provides one meal a day, rice.  To save money, they'll show up with a giant bowl and fill up and then not buy food.  They then work piece work.  The more they work, the more they make so most of them work two shifts a day.  None of them are fat.  China is unique in another way.  Everyone works, everyone.  There's no free ride even for the elderly.  The elderly may just clean a sidewalk or street, but they work. In fact, it's quite the social event. Very few fat people in China.  Sitting on your butt eating free food while watching a tube all day, I'm afraid is uniquely a western thing.

I think thats one of the major differences between 'the poors' in the West and 'the poors' in Asia.  They may have a carb heavy diet, but they are also usually burning a lot more of those carbs to just stay afloat.  In many Asian cultures being poor and fat is also publicly shamed rather than celebrated.

I used to do apartment maintenance in a subsidized housing unit.  This was full of elderly or 'disabled' welfare bums.

The food left out after food bank drops was amazing to me.   It quickly became apparent that a LACK of food was NOT the issue.  A lack of GUMPTION was the problem...

If you dropped off Mac n Cheese Kraft dinner, they whined that you didn't supply milk and butter to go with it.  All they wanted was easy to prep lazy food.  Poptarts.  Frozen pizza.  Coke and Doritos ...

I was always amazed with the rejected rice.  It wasn't wanted.  They were too lazy to measure one cup of rice, two cups of water, and bring it to a boil.  Utterly amazing...  Canned veggies was another.  If it wasn't basically ready to eat after warming, they were not interested.

I was fresh out of a divorce, had lost everything, and was hustling trying to pay rent and put food in the fridge.  Gleaning the food drop box and taking the rejects kept me afloat.  It also hardened my heart a little.  I've got damned little respect for welfare bums too lazy to boil water.

That’s why I have no sympathy for the poor in America. Now if I know their story and know life dealt them a tough hand…I will help those people. But, I also know they will quickly get back on their feet and not need assistance any more. For many of the “poor” in America, getting your own welfare is your life’s goal.

I have a sister in law who has been a lazy welfare case drug addicted bum her whole adult life. We refuse to help her. We did a long time ago out of the kindness of our hearts and it came back to bite us. So we stopped and haven’t regretted it one bit. She does complain to people we both know who tell us what she says. She complains that her family has abandoned her. Well, yes we have. She refuses to act like an adult so we will not support her lifestyle.

Odd personal observation: I believe that preppers are almost universally people who went through hell and vowed “never again.”  There are a few who learned through others’ misfortunes or from their parents, grandparents, etc.  But most are “never again” types.  The replies here bear that out.

@bulldog8 - If it’s unhealthy or junk food, it stays.  The observations @frozenny made match mine.  If there’s any amount of work, forethought, or meal prep involved, they refuse.  In the last 12 months, I’ve gotten over 100 lbs of rice in 1-5 lb bags.  Minute rice is more commonly kept since it’s faster, but even that can take too long.  Canned fruits and vegetables are another that goes, though the canned fruit is akin to the popularity of Minute Rice because they can open and eat from the can.

If it isn’t an easy-open lid, it also goes.  Can openers?  Ain’t no one got time for that!  I had one notable exception.  A very elderly lady, widowed, with severe and untreated arthritic hands always put the cans on the give-away table.  I bought her an electric can and jar opener with an electric cutter for opening bags.  She was incredibly grateful.  We became friends.  Turns out she was an amazing baker and was always happy to grab others’ cast-offs.  “He’s a young strapping buck and I know he gets paid cash quietly (ie. paid cash under the table).  He can open a can; he’s just stupid and lazy!”  Agnes went to her reward some years back.  I miss her cheerful outlook and bluntness, even though it caused me no end of complaints from ‘the offended.’    But Agnes was and still is the only one of over 300 tenants who had any excuse for not opening cans.

I’m currently in my own vehicle, minding a locksmith’s van while they work on a house I own and rent.  There are a couple of “urban youths” eyeballing my locksmith’s work van.  Time to go outside so they know that they and the van are being watched.  Back later to finish my reply…

Dude, easy on the flexing. I grew up on toast for breakfast and mostly bologna sammiches for main courses.

Also, local cops told me that stealing from the donation boxes was not a crime, because there was no victim.  Smile and wave response. At least I got to shame the thief with photos of her fat face and mini van plates on the neighborhood app.

Prebans,

another unfortunate reality of the modern world.  I have a buddy who mows yards in one of the neighboring larger towns.  He has to pay a kid to sit on the trailer 24/7 while he's working to keep from being stolen blind........

I know my grandad told stories of getting whooped when he took 5-22 shells squirrel hunting and didn't bring back 5 squirrels!!  Different generation for sure.

UPDATE AUG 06, 2024

A couple more boxes got delivered on Sunday.  These weren’t counted above.  The rejects hit the discard table.  Today I caught someone bagging things up.  “There ain’t be no room; I throw this shit out for you Mr. Prebans.”  So I thanked them for their hard work and said that I’ll take it from there.

Okay, I’m back.  Ended up having to warn off two sets of potential thieves yesterday.  @Docgp one of the ways I guarantee getting good service is being willing to watch my workmen’s work trucks.  Between that and paying on the spot, I usually get service when needed.  Even emergency and after hours service when that’s supposedly not available.  And I’m happy to pay them any way their want, how they want, and when they want.  Pro tip: Cash on the barrel head always wins.

Lesson for us:  Treat your workmen good and they’ll treat you better.  I know I can get help in an emergency when the rest of the world can’t even get a return call.  And cash TALKS.

Bonus:  On hot days, I have water, sodas, energy drinks, etc., on ice in a cooler.  “It’s hotter than Hades out there.  You want anything?”  Treat these folks like they deserve to be treated, especially when nobody else does, and good things happen.

@fxntime speaks an ugly but real truth.  Our “hungry” rarely are.  I draw the line at children.  They don’t have much option beyond what their parents choose to give them.  I’ve met some truly hungry kids.  (And when I do, the “discards” go to them.  I’ve taught a few kids how to use can openers, microwaves, etc.)  But the adults?  If it’s not ZERO work, often they don’t want it.  And having personally seen what it’s like when your government declares you unworthy of food (Cuba), it’s astounding seeing the flippant attitudes here.

The observations of @TomJefferson and the discussion with @fxntime are also spot-on.  I’ve got tenants on full disability because they’re too fat to work and get around.  They’re fat because they have a dedicated diet of (based on hallway trash) Church’s Chicken, Checkers, and pigging out at Golden Corral.  But self-induced or not, they get on the dole for it.

A lesson for us?  @TomJefferson also spoke about prepping based on how you eat now.  He’s right.  Prep around your diet, not what you think your diet should be.

@bophades has a fair point.  And being around the ghetto mentality wears on me sometimes.  But that’s another discussion.

@pkgd63 speaks truth too.  There is NOTHING beyond TODAY.  Yesterday is forgotten and tomorrow might as well be next year.  There is no planning or forethought except in the most extreme of circumstances.

@cmw - I’ll keep posting about my experiences so long as they’re useful to people here.

Those are two make your own muffin kits.  It has a Christmas theme, but the muffin mix hasn’t gone bad.  Just a lot of red and green colors.

Likely rejected because it requires work to make the muffin mix into muffins, plus an egg, 1/4 cup oil, and 1-1/4 cups of heavy whipping cream for the frosting.

I'm jealous of that stash.  You could probably supplement your proteins in your diet with just free stuff from this arrangement!

My daughter just volunteered at the local food pantry as part of the coalition of churches in the county.  The protein they were providing was frozen rockfish fillets.  Dang!  A big bag of it too, along with other similar stuff to your pics.  Rural county, not rich.

Couldn't have said it better myself.  I see it all the time with the homeless, boxes of food sitting out in the rain, rotting, because they don't like what they were given & can just get something else for free later.  I used to work part-time doing security at a food pantry.  They would take their free food to the bar down the street and trade it towards booze or cash.  I talked to one of those "free" cell phone guys that you see on every corner in the poor areas.  They said all you had to show is that you get some type of "gubmint" assistance to get a free cell phone, it didn't even have to have your name on it, just something from the government & they were happy.

5-7 foot chest type deep freeze, well under $200 new. Toss something on the top of it [if it insulates, all the better] and use it as a piece of furniture.

A few years back I was in a city doing some boozin with a friend.

We stopped at a Dunkin before our trip home and I grabbed a sandwich. Seeing a homeless woman sleeping in one of the booths I asked for a 2nd and left it on her table.

As we got into the truck outside I saw her arouse and look at the sandwich with disgust....

Love the dog.  Dogs have been survival tools well as long as man has been surviving.

Tj Story Time Dog Alarm

Years ago when we lived in Houston, somebody broke into our apartment while we were in bed asleep.  What freaked me was not the violation but I was sleeping literally with a gun under my pillow and had I woken up I'd fired.  What if that was some Kid?  Nothing I own is worth a kid.  I bought me a little apartment appropriate mouthy dog, an Eskimo Spitz, and that ended that.  People would make fun of our little foo foo dog but man did she do her job.

One day I have her out for a ride and stop at a 7-Eleven.  I don't know how the dog knew, she hated drunks or high people and would go apeshit when around them.   Out of the 7-Eleven comes this big rough liking guy.  The dog goes apeshit and the guy jumps like he was shot.   He sees the little dog and relaxes.  He snidely says, "You need a Doberman."  I smile and reply, "Warning by Spitz, protection by Smith and Wesson. Why the hell do I need a Doberman?"

I see that all the time.  I’ve only seen a handful be grateful for anything outside of money, booze, and drugs.  (I knew I crossed the Rubicon when I saw a car pull off and gave some “pity crack” with a pipe to a bum.  The bum was VERY happy, pulled a bulb, and lit up immediately.

It’s also common to see the same people haunting the same corners.  You’ll get extreme bloody fights if someone tries “taking” their corner; vicious street fighting, broken bottles, knives, bricks, shopping carts (watched as someone got knocked to the ground and another slammed a steel shopping cart into them over and over again)…  I’m pretty sure I remember people getting shot over corner control as well, though that’s less common.

Lessons for us:  There are places we do not belong.  Avoid these places.  There are no rules in a street fight.  If you must fight someone who feels that they have nothing to lose, whether or not they actually do have something to lose, you are playing for keeps and no holds are barred.  If you become homeless or must masquerade as one, there are rules of the streets; learn and obey them.

@TomJefferson

Jewel has to be most expensive nearly free dog possible.  Long story short, I discovered she has Addison’s Disease.  That’s a pill a day and a shot a month for life.  But she was already partially trained, very loving and loyal, and an EXCELLENT watch dog.

On Super Bowl Sunday this year, we went to bed.  Maybe 30 min later, Jewel woke and started growling.  Then she followed me to the front door, her growls going to an angry bark I haven’t heard before or since.  I thought I heard low voices outside.  Meh, I knew the game was running late (not a football guy and I don’t even own TV with signal).  I’m in a subdivision and my neighbor was probably holding a party that was letting out.  Back to bed.

But Jewel refused to move from the front door.  She sat down, facing the door, and was growling.  I gently encouraged her to go to bed.  While she quieted, she wouldn’t leave the door.  Ok, suit yourself.  Maybe 30 min later, I heard her lay down on her bed in the bedroom.

The next night, I had her out for a walk and ran into my neighbors.  “Oh, how was your party?”  “How did you know we went to a party out in (name) last night?”

They were almost two counties over, which is an hour-plus away.  That’s when Jewel more than earned her keep.

better quality than the prepared, frozen, "highly-processed" meals my elderly mother receives

you might consider a church based food pantry for some of it

I have dealt with a number of juvenile killers. They are usually worse than adults. Adults have usually developed some sort of moral compass/fear of death….it may be very warped but it’s there. Kids often do not.

-“Food Life Balanced” brand Premium White Chicken and Beef Stew;
-“Emmi” brand Fondue (price tag says reduced to $6.24, meaning it was probably $12 before hitting clearance);
-More shelled walnuts plus a Cashew and Macadamia mix;
-Del Monte brand canned goods;

Interesting update and funny as well.

Valid point about the peanut butter. It’s not worth starving over a lack of willingness to eat new foods and even more stupid to starve over a different brand of the same food.

In all the accounts of survival I have read about, one thing always stands out to me. The person or people who adapt, survive. New ways of living, new ways of eating, etc. Those who refuse to adapt, die.
