It is amazing how much "the light has come on" and how much she has matured in the last 7 days.
Hunting partner has been on a roll, band #8 on Friday. Funny thing it was only 20 numbers off Quinns first duck (from the second day of the season) and they were both banded last year in 2024. Really getting icy and cold, birds are thinning out, and where they are is getting the snot pounded out of them.   |

Thanks for sharing, have loved to follow the journey.... I am hoping that you are eating the ducks, is there much difference in the ducks as far as taste? Do you have a favorite? I have no experience with duck that I can recall, dad was never a duck hunter when I was young, and so neither was I. Never had to the courage to try it when I have seen it on the menu.... Good Luck and keep the posts coming. 3 labs in my history but not working dogs. My first became quite the ladies draw when I took him to college... |

Ducks are better than geese in my opinion, teal and wood ducks are my favorite, but the mallards and blacks from the last month are fat as little pigs and are great on the table. They are all dark meat and the key to cooking is not to go past medium rare. |

2025 duck season is over, Quinn finished up with a great day. We were not sure how she would handle the extreme cold, but did fine, she still has her "puppy coat" which is not her full insulated lab coat that they seem to get when they are older. She will never get the coat that Ellie has, just her breeding. Temps did not get above 7* but as you can she, she loves her heater. I am just amazed what a "rescue" lab that was never supposed to hunt turned into, can't wait for a real training program this spring!      |

Just keeping the tread alive in the off season, survived the long cold, shitty winter. Quinn got spayed about a month ago, was not happy about slowing down. With the weather breaking, getting Quinn out for a bunch of T drills/pile training, she can't get enough of it. Ellie could give 2 shits, never had a dog that was such a great meat dog but could care less about training   And Q has got a major tennis ball addiction in the off season, trashed the bed piling them up    Snow finally melting, hot tub cover is nice and warm.   Had a visitor out back a couple weeks ago at lunch, the girls were not amused  |

I hate to be posting this, but we had to put Ellie down last week, exactly 7 years from "got ya day" She was showing some signs of not feeling well for the last couple of months, vet could not really see anything wrong with her, Then the last Friday of June she was having trouble breathing, brought her to the emergency vet Sunday and she was gone that evening. Laryngeal Paralysis was the cause. The option they gave us was bring her to Tufts Medical Center for a 15-20K surgery with no guarantee the tie back surgery would help, even if it did, her quality of life would be a "couch potato" at best. No swimming, fetching, nothing, and life expectancy is greatly reduced after the surgery, pneumonia forms very easily as they can't block things getting into their lungs. It was one of the shittiest decisions of our lives. RIP little yellow duck dog   |

RIP Ellie, enjoy endless days running across the rainbow bridge. VTDG you have my deepest sympathy and thoughts dealing with such a big hit, loosing such a companion. |
