You all might have seen my classic "old school" Savage .308 rifle and the equally old, basic, common, Bushnell 3-9x40 scope (ain't nothing fancy...) I took a drive up to the big family owned gun shop here in town called Green Top. They've been around for decades here, north of Richmond along Route 1 almost to Ashland, VA along I-95. They started out as a simple mom 'n pop store with a green roof (i.e. Green Top), but grew and grew, and exceeded fire capacity many times in their old building. It was asses & elbows almost every single day. Forget Saturdays, as you wouldn't be able to find a parking spot! They took over the old, abandoned Gander Mountain building, and grew and grew to rival Cabela's & Bass Pro. Getting to the point: I stopped in there looking at new Vortex scopes, Leupold scopes, etc... to upgrade the old 20+ year old Bushnell. I showed this young kid a photo on my phone as seen below of my 1997 (as per serial# lookup from Savage) Model 110, and the old Bushnell scope. He looked at it, like (W)hiskey (T)ango (F)oxtrot? (Most likely my rifle was probably as old as he was! LOL..) I had to "educate him" on the sad history of Savage back in the 90's where they were faced with Chapter 11... They took all their rifle stocks, and to save money, they made EVERYTHING long action. 30-06, .270, .308, .243, .25-06, 7mm-08, etc... For the "short action" rounds, they installed a metal block, in behind the internal magazine, to fill the space. It works well for what it is! Mine is kind of a hybrid, long action/short action style rifle. I keep my .308 sighted at 1" high at 100 yards. That's good enough for me. Anyone remember these? If I was to swap out the scope... Vortex Diamondback or Leupold VX Freedom? Hmmm.....  |

I had one in .223... It shot VERY well... Like every rifle in that day, triggers were all apparently adjusted by corporate liability attorneys. Pulls in the 6,7,8 lb range were common... Set screws in the trigger were "glued" in with colored lock Tite. You could adjust the trigger to a far more reasonable level, but it broke the lock Tite and you were on your own.... Savage shot well. They would eventually come out with the Accutrigger and turn the industry on it's head. Thank you savage |

Nice, I picked up an older 1960's? Savage 110 30.06 not too long ago off Gunbroker. It needs a new stock but has iron sights and a standard trigger. I have 2 other modern Savage rifles all with Accu-Triggers. I hate the Accu-Trigger and was just contemplating swapping them with Timney Triggers. |

Thanks... Yeah, old Savage rifles ain't the prettiest thing out there, but they are TACK DRIVERS!  I used to have an old, old, old, Marlin 336 in .30-30 with open sights. Hiked all up and down the Blue Ridge Mtns in Virginia with it. But then, my eyes just weren't what they used to be, so I traded it in for the Savage .308 w/Bushnell scope, and well... there you have it. |

I have a Savage 110 that was made around 1995 or 1996. It has a .308 barrel and long action. There is no spacer in the magazine for the shorter cartridges. It has a Hogue stock and a 20" threaded barrel that had a muzzle break on it when I got it, it now has a QD break for my silencer. There is a long story, but I found it as a pile of parts in my buddies basement while helping his widow clear out his guns. I think he was going to build up a 1,000 yard rifle out of the action. One of these days I will stretch it out that far, but for now 300 yards is the furthest I have shot it. I've stopped at Greentop a few times since they moved into the old Gander building. |
| I bought a new 110E in .243 Winchester back end of 83' or 84' in San Antonio Tx. Would use if for a season or two at Ft Bragg NC. Don't have the rifle anymore but still have the very clear Simmons 2.5x fix scope that I had mounted on it. Used that scope on my SA SAR-48 Bush rifle to drop a whitetail at 300m out in west Texas years later. |

I had one in .223. I shor my first tiny little bug hole group with it... Mounted a Weaver ,k15 fixed 15x scope on it. More than a few crows and groundhogs met an untimely end. It was a full-sized 30-06 long action, with a magazine block to bring it down to .223 length. And with a 26" bull barrel, it weighed a ton.. Pre-accutrigger, solidly in the 10# attorney approved trigger era. Trigger set screws adjusted with factory locktite. Trigger adjustment was easy, but once the locktite was broken, you were on your own for factory service . Even then, Savage was the only big maker using button rifled barrels...big clunky rifles, but the shot well |

I bought a left handed 308 in the mid 90's if I remember. It was a synthetic stock model 10 Turned it into a scout rifle with a mount that screwed and epoxied on the barrel. Rear peep was a Lyman that uses the rear scope holes. The front was a band the was cross pinned So its a true short action. I think it was 286.00 I didn't know about bankruptcy and switching to all long actions. Do they still do that? I only see 110 and 111 no model 10's Are the short actions called model 110's now? |
| There's been a lefty .223 sitting at my LGS for months on the used rack. The long bolt stroke is kind of comical on a .223. It's wearing one of the old Tasco scopes with the FOV wider than it is high. If I didn't have a lefty .223 bolt rifle already I'd probably buy it just for low cost practice. |

I'ma disagree with you I think that is the classic hunting rifle look plain, simple, cheap, but does the job very well I have this on a Savage Axis in 308 and LOVE it. | I have an Ultralite 110 in 308 that I really like, but I hate how shitty the action is compared to my 700. If the action was half as smooth as my 700 it would be a rifle I take to the grave. |
