Power and Data.  Look for cameras that support POE (Power Over Ethernet).

I'm contemplating the idea of some sort of wall mounted remote viewing stations for my Hikvision IP system.

I'm thinking something along the lines of designing a wall mount to hold an inexpensive tablet that would allow remote viewing.  The screen would be on regularly like a monitor, so it would need constant power, but also be able to be disconnected from power to become portable.  I would want to have a couple in different areas in the house.

I guess it's not really any different than regular remote viewing from my ipad, other than coming up with a mounting system.

Does this make any sense?  Anyone try anything similar?

I don't want to shell out the money for a couple more ipads, so I'm thinking about using a budget tablet.

All I really need is power and an internet connection right?  That way I can put a couple around the house in fixed locations so I don't have to go to the main NVR monitor every time I want to view.

I'm trying to make it a little more convenient for my wife when I'm not home.

I was thinking of the same thing.  have something that just shows all the cameras live that I can put on a wall or have in the bedroom.  would be pretty sweet to do.  maybe get a cheap android tablet to do it and use something like tinyCam Monitor or Blue Iris.  I'll probably look in to it once I get my system set up.

You're looking at raymax/raytec/Axis/etc type wide-angle panels for that kind of coverage area/power.

Any suggestions?

I'd imagine used iPads can be had on Ebay all day long for cheap.  Put all the ipads on your same icloud account, and buy IP Cam Viewer once, then download it to all the iPads on that account.

IP cam Viewer works under android too, so you could use either environment.

Seems like it would be pretty easy to do.

For those of you buying (or planning to buy) Chinese market Hikvision camera, do so at your own risk.

Hikvision USA will not warranty or service them (at least per my Hikvision rep).

Grayman, have you tried the Luma Surveillance NVRs or the Wirepath IP cameras?

speaking of grey market, I was messing with some Qsee HD IP cams drivers today and found that they are made by http://www.tvt.net.cn/, I think these guys are a major OEM.
Looks like they make others too, some bodies look like Hikvision, Swann etc. They have some neat new h265 cams.

I put a Hikvision setup from Nelly Security in my house a few months back. My grandmother wants me to install something similar in her house. I went back to Nelly Security, and I am not seeing Hikvision cameras on their site anymore. I found an NVR that looks like the one I have. As far as the cameras, are the EYEserv's they sell worth fooling with? Are they on par with the Hikvisions?

The Hikvisions are now unbranded. They are "H Series" at Nellys.

I am 99% sure that the Eyesurv cameras are made by Dahua. On par with Hikvision. I just picked up an Eyesurv PTZ that I'm playing around with.

As noted above, they're listed as "H" series now...  probably at Hikvision's insistence.

And the eyesurvs are Dahua.  I run my one Dahua PTZ under the ONVIF profile, and it works just fine.

I want to put a camera near the end of my driveway to watch for mailbox thieves and get plates of incoming vehicles. I was thinking about this one http://overseas.hikvision.com/us/Products_accessries_10533_i7585.html mounted about 3 to 4 feet off the ground looking south from were Caleb is sitting

it says it comes in a 4mm and a 6mm lenses, which would be better also will it be a problem with the 2 IR lights on the camera tree

I have not used that one, but IMO Nellys is good-to-go.

I'm not using any sort of surge-protection between my cameras and the main switch.  They're all on the same structure, and if a camera takes a hit, the house has taken a hit... and I likely have much bigger problems.

I only brought it up because we had lightning strike near the house last year and it appears to have come into the house over the CAT5.  Took out 2 POE switches, 1 camera, 1 24 port switch, router, access point, and a couple other network attached devices.

I wouldn't hesitate to use that if you have the need.  I've bought from L-Com before and they sell quality stuff, and the spec sheet on that looks good. Typically only needed when the far device is up on a mast and higher than surrounding objects.   It comes to $15.63 per port, which isn't much overall since you'll want to be using shielded CAT6 and a Gigabit PoE switch in a nicely grounded rack with it too.

Like TGM, I don't use anything like that on my cameras because all wiring is inside the house that they're mounted to, though I do use shielded CAT6 to a grounded patch panel and switch.  I have used Ethernet surge suppressors at work for wireless bridge units mounted high outside, also with shielded CAT6.

I recently completed my home security installation.

I've had the parts for a while, but needed to locate a contractor to assist with running the CAT5e for three of the camera.  I live in two story home on a four foot pier and beam foundation, and didn't have a 30' extension ladder.

I otherwise did all the work myself including cabling, setup, etc.  I'm very happy with the Hikvision products.  The mobile app is free and very solid on iOS.  My house is laid out differently.  I'm on a small lot in a highly urban area.  My lot runs street to street where my garage faces a different street than my house does, so monitoring the garage space is very important to me.

My setup is as follows:

1 x camera on front porch w/PIR motion detector to trigger activity - DS-2CD2532F-IS
1 x camera living room to back porch - DS-2CD2432F-IW
1 x camera on back porch w/PIR motion detector to trigger activity - DS-2CD2532F-IS
1 x camera behind garage - DS-2CD2332-I
NVR - DS-7608NI-E2/8P with 3TB HD

PIRs are DSC LC-151 PIR/Microwave units.  Very accurate and outdoor rated.

I have the PIR motion detectors setup to send me an email.  The alerts I get from them are very accurate with low false alerts.  One issue with Hikvision is that while the push notifications from the NVR work, using alarm I/O does not generate useful push notifications.  Unlike motion notifications that allow for instant jump to playback or live view, alarm I/O just gives you a notification.  The email will have to suffice.

Since we often use our back gate and have guest/housekeeper coming through, just today I finished my keypad/magnetic lock for the back gate.  I rebuilt the gate and then ran all the wiring for the locking system.  It was a project for sure.

Here's some pictures of the setup:

Things still on my to do list:

1. Back porch cam doesn't get good night time IR performance.  Not sure if it's the placement or what, but I'll probably need an emitter.  When the back porch light is on, the quality is great, so I think if I can rig an emitter in the the 12V line running my PIR  I should get good performance.

2. Figure out a smartlook feature for my back door.  I need one that I can create guest codes that are scheduled (i.e. for house keeper).

Very nice set up and nice looking house!  My only concern would be the exposed cable at cameras.

How does the wifi camera compare to the wired ones?  I have the same NVR and have been considering throwing an indoor wireless camera into the mix.

That's a very nice install... and kudos on actually using the PIRs.

Seriously... I can't stress enough the difference good sensors make.

They are an absolute MUST for real-time alerts.   Alerts should mean something... they should be WORTH LOOKING AT... and the only way to ensure that is to use quality, hard-wired sensors (reed switches, quality PIRs, microwaves, etc).  If it's going to interrupt you, and demand your attention, it should have something valuable/reliable to say.  This is a pet peeve of mine from my time in Emergency Medicine... EVERYTHING beeps, flashes, alarms, or demands-your-attention... and 99% of it is garbage.  After a while, you tune it out and ignore it.  Your job becomes one of triaging information.

Make your alerts mean something... and that means good sensors.  There is no substitute.
Everything you are doing is wrong, and it is my sworn duty to resist you.

My house is tall. It has a 4' foundation (pier and beam) and 10' first floor cielings.

You'd need a 12' ladder from the ground to get them or an 8' from the deck. On the front of my house is a bike/hiking path that is very busy. Anyone messing with wires would highly visible. If they're willing to drag a ladder in my backyard, the break in is going to occur. The cameras are mostly for deterrent. I have signs posted as well. Security is about layers.  My back porch glass also has shatter resistant film applied to ensure that if someone wants in, they'll have to work for it.  I'm in a crowded urban environment in a neighborhood with many dual employment households.  The criminals know that most homes are empty 9 - 5. I want them to know that I'll get their photos if they try to get in.  Also that they may just want to break into my neighbors house instead .

I'm also using the Ring door bell.  It records on motion events and will let me know if someone is ringing the bell (common before a break in) and I can talk to the person even if I'm remote.  The lens there is a 720p fish eye mounted to see faces really well.  I'm actually quite happy with that device and choose to pay the relatively nominal yearly monitoring fee for video storage for it.

While that indoor camera is wireless, I'm using it wired. I've read that you better have rock solid wireless or run the sub stream to the NVR if you want it to work. I personally didn't want my wifi network loaded with a video stream so I spent the effort to have the cable punched in. We went through the back of that upper most cabinet and then into the wall.

I'm having a hell of a time getting my cameras to work with my NVR. The cameras are 2CD2132F domes (Nelly's H brand) and the NVR is a Hikvision 7716. I was hoping to plug everything in and see some pictures but the NVR didn't recognize any of the cameras. I updated the firmware but that was no help. I used SAPD to set the IP of each of the cameras manually and then entered that into the NVR, but still had nothing.

At this point I started to panic that the cable I pulled might be damaged so I retested all of the cables, no problems there. I then used a PoE injector to hook each camera to my router and they are working perfectly that way. I could see the feeds on the ONVIF device app and even my iphone. After that I plugged everything back into the NVR and made a cup of coffee, came back and one channel was up and running. This one was a channel that was still set to PnP, so I switched them all back to PnP and cussed at it for a few more hours but no progress was made.

Last night as I was stewing about this I realized that the one camera that finally connected is a really short run. The other 3 are 150-200' of cat6. Is it possible that the ~200ft runs are just too much for the NVR's PoE to handle? I haven't had much luck finding spec for max run length of the PoE cables.

I have a couple wifi based cameras that I use but they are mostly for convenience if I need to watch something specific for a few days. All of the real feeds are wired.

I always thought that if I was going to run wifi cameras I would actually stand up a separate wireless network with a non broadcasting SSID and keep my main one clear for portable device use.
There are hundreds of reasons to own a gun but it’s mostly the reasons I can't think of that make me glad to have them.

The NVR PoE should handle it.

Did you change the admin password on the camera? I found that if you change the admin password that I couldn't get PnP to work.  On my Hikvision setup, I manually configure each camera at the NVR and through SADP.  Found that worked more consistently.

If I could see the camera directly via the web when bypassing the NVR, it always worked when I connected to the NVR.  The other thing to try is to use the POE injector from the NVR output to insure the NVR POE is not the problem, i.e NVR->cable->injector->cable->camera.

Yeah the newer cameras make you change the password when you activate them (you have to activate them via web GUI or SADP). I think that may be causing issues with the PnP, but it did somehow work on one of them. I did make sure the admin password on the NVR and cameras matched. From what I hear the manual configuration like you mentioned is usually pretty trouble free and seems to solve most peoples issues. My googling hasn't found any other accounts of people having issues like this.

Since posting I've seen that the standard max distance is 300m, I'm not anywhere close to that. I will try using the injector between the NVR and camera when I get home. I'll be a bit disappointed if the $10 amazon PoE injector runs the cameras and the NVR won't. I spent 2 really long and unpleasant days fishing that cable from the attic on one side of the house to the basement on the other, I really hope I don't have to redo any of that.

Check your NVR firmware as well.

I think I've read that the new firmware that forces the password change may require a different level of NVR firmware as well.

If you got it from Nellys, they should be able to help. I have cheap Chinese crap bought from Amazon, so I don't mess with the firmware, but bought my cams before the firmware update.

I updated the firmware for the NVR only last night. It came from B&H and should be the HikvisionUSA one. I didn't update the cameras. I think Nelly's does support them, but I wasn't sure about the firmware so I just left them alone.

Hopefully the PoE injector experiment will tell me if it's a config issue or not.

If you bought everything from Nelly's, give them a call.  They will setup your system remotely for you, if you're comfortable with that.  If not, they'll walk you through it.  I had an issue with my port forwarding, after a few hours of frustration, I called and they fixed it in a few minutes.

Yeah... Nelly's tech support is actually helpful.  Even i have had to call

I'd love to let Nelly's sort this out, but I got the NVR from B&H, and I think that's where the issue is.

I will try the PoE injector between the camera and the NVR tonight. My laptop recently died and I replaced it with a new one...with new windows. I was planning on plugging it into one of the PoE ports and changing the IP to see what I could see from that end but I got frustrated just trying to figure out where the start menu was I may give that another shot tonight as well.
