Hold on, I'll just draw a picture...I have a public retail business so I'm not too concerned w/ the physical aspects of the building exterior being posted online, lol. ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us This is the front of my store, the measurements are approximate; I'm thinking maybe i can go w/ the cheaper cnb camera (VD) w/ the 4-9mm lens as opposed to the VF w/ the wider 2.8-10.5? I'm really only looking at about 75 degree of coverage...I'd rather focus on the people coming in the front door and the truck and get more detail than just have a bigger area. I plan to mount it on the brick face under the porch roof (about 8 ft high) as per the pic. I have 3 cfl floodlight bulbs under the porch roof (75 watt equivalent) and a 12x3 ft box sign above the porch roof that puts out some light on the lot, as well as a streetlight directly across the street from where i park the truck...the area should be lit enough for the cnb cam. Lemme know what you think...I honestly have no idea how I am paying for the stuff i have going on right now, so I have an absolutely minimal budget to work w/ I've got an old gaming machine that will work w/ the geovision 4 ch card and I have a crappy crt monitor in my basement...I found GOOD Siamese cable, pretermineated fro a reasonable price...any other suggestions will be welcomed. This is just a temp solution; i plan on putting a nice IP cam system in eventually. ETA: well something good came out of all this All press is good press. Speed |

I'll look at this later tonight when I get a chance. Check back.
ETA: yes, I think you can get good area coverage of that door/truck with a single camera. The resolution won't be nearly good enough to get a plate, but a vehicle description is doable, and certainly better than nothing. A 75-degree coverage angle is also possible with a small-aperture lens. ETA2: and congrats on the free TV airtime. I've been on TV a bunch of times over the years, usually because the hospital media director shows up with a crew in-tow and insists on interviewing me about something. That's about the only time I'll violate my "never talk to reporters" rule... and that's under duress. |

I been working on building a nice 2U DVR box with Gigabit Ethernet and a 3TB RAID 5.
Its currently sitting on the dinning room table. I also have the first 2 cameras (indoor only rated) to mount up while I'm seaching for the others I will need for the exterior views. My friends have been joking about how serious I have been about getting this project completed and up and runinng - they think of it more like just another iphone toy app. Well I don't have a cell phone, and I certainly did not consider this a "toy" project. Tonite when I reached the house it was frozen and without power... My first thought was that my payment was not processed properly and the power cut. Approaching my shop I note the double sided dead bolt has been removed and is on the ground. - Inside I find a broken window that was used to gain entry. This small room with window was to be one of the first places the camera were to be mounted. This room was where I was setting up my new reloading room (I'm still moving in from my old house.) The loading bench with the presses is out here yet. But boxes of bullets, brass, dies sets, primers and other stuff were present - and now gone. The thing that chaps my ass the most is the thief was a gunny - none of the other tools were touched - only ammo and components were stolen. - My Machinist tools are worth much more than loading supplies - or they were before the economy hit the toilet. These were not even looked at. Anyway, now that this has happened I will employee a live house sitter who is not afraid to threaten trespassers with having to dig there own shallow graves... Todays moral is - It don't work if it isn't ON. For me thats due to the fact it wasn't installed yet AND I failed to add a additional level of coverage in my plan. The thieves used the main disconnect at the power meter because that is normally not locked... It will be before Monday. But as part of my security plan I failed to consider adding an email alert to tell me the system had switched to running from UPS due to power outage. The security system has a MONSTER UPS, and a almost as large unit supports the primary router and modem. Both of these would run for several hours on the reserve power - but due to remote location I would loose 1 camera that is on a wireless link and gets its local power via wall wart. And I also failed to consider I might need to silence to UPS alarm and make the UPS a hardened unit to keep the thugs from disconnecting it or alerting them to search for other devices. These guys were not smart - taking time to use tools to remove the double deadbolt to get out the front door - they could have just pulled the "no power" release handle on a rope for the garage door and exited that way closing it after themselves and it would have been less obvious a break in had occurred. My House survived the time without heat - its been getting down to 10 at night and I feared the worse for the plumbing. |

Sorry to hear that, ProfGAB101.
Considering a system's vulnerabilities is something it helps to work into your system design; potential vandalism of cameras is just one attack to consider. One of the advantages of PoE cameras is that you have a central power source for all of your devices, which simplifies power-failure planning. I use a large rack-mount UPS in my server room that holds up the switches, firewall, modem, and servers until the backup generator comes online (which only takes a matter of seconds). I also have dedicated cameras to watch the utility entries into the home (power, phone, cable, and gas), as well as cover the approaches to the generator pad. I'm glad to hear you're going big on the DVR... you'll be amazed how a system can grow once you start tweaking and expanding. I think I'm up to 14 cameras right now... and the way Luxriot allows you to easily add/delete cameras (as opposed to Milestone, where you only get a couple of camera "changes" before it stops you), I'd definitely recommend Luxriot for the hobbyist, or growing system. Just make sure you buy a big enough license (I went with the 16-channel Enterprise version... and it was worth it). |

The one camera that would blackout in a power failure would be up on the power poll with the wall wart feeding right off the main panel. There is just no place for a ups or to run cable. This was the only wireless unit in the plan.
As to the perps knowing what I had - another failure on my part. There was a 5lb and 3lb canister of WW231 and maybe 8 loose 1K boxes of primers sitting on top of the pile of boxes about 5ft from the window. It was stacked that way cause it was some of the last items unloaded from the truck. - I didn't even think about peeping tom's and the window since I'm back a few hundred feet from the private road and my nearest neighbor is about 1/2 mile away. The window was not facing the road. One down side to having a ranch out in nowhere land is perps have all day and don't have to worry about noise. - I face double damage since having a machine shop means all the tools they could possibly need to get something open are all right there, assuming the fools know what to use and how to use it. Flip side is a machine shop is also a Darwin trap, I just don't want to pull up to a pile of ashes. |

Some friends of ours have been having problems with people throwing things at their house, punctured tires, etc.
Yesterday they installed one of THESE systems from Swann. I went over today to check it out. I like the ability to view the cameras from my iphone. Anything wrong with buying this system? $499.00 at FRYS. |

No... though you can probably get that setup for cheaper. I'm generally not a fan of the system-in-a-box camera deals. They tend to be low-quality, the night-vision sucks, they sometimes use proprietary cables so that you can't easily swap out one of their crappy cameras for a higher-quality one, or a dome, or a WDR camera... They do work... most of the time... though some people end up moving up to something better eventually. As long as you view it with that in mind, and don't expect too much out of it, you're probably good. I generally recommend PC-based DVRs... they're simply much easier to expand and/or repair. |

This is clearly a lot of work your part. Thanks again, Gene You're welcome... hard to believe this thread is almost two years old. I didn't do it alone, though... plenty of other posters have contributed. As for the remainder of your question, I don't think you can get what you're talking about for 500 bucks. Let's say we decided to do this as economically as possible, but get you the maximum bang-for-your-buck. Start with four CNB domes at $75-100 each. Add $100 in cables and connectors. A 12VDC or 24VAC PSU is probably another 30 bucks or so.... we're already at about $500 bucks just for cameras, cabling, and power supply. We still have to get some sort of DVR. At this point, you could get a Geovision encoder card for anywhere from $150-250, and throw it in an old PC (equipped with a nice fat $80 1.5TB drive from Newegg)... or grab a used Thinkcentre from Ebay for another $200 bucks, and throw that same $80 hard drive in that computer for a dedicated box. You could also get a Nuuo encoder card, which gives you the option of going "hybrid," by adding IP cameras to the same system later (you buy IP licenses from Nuuo, and use the same machine... it just shows up as another camera). In other words, you're looking at about $1000 minimum. What you get, however, will run far more reliably than the Swann unit, you'll have built it yourself, so you will be intimately familiar with it, and able to fix it in a pinch. The analog PC-based DVR machine you just built can also be transitioned to a network DVR via adding IP licenses (like the Nuuo encoders), or by putting your analog cameras on something like an Axis camera server, and adding the server to whatever NVR software you chose to use. |

You have to run power to your camera anyways (wireless, or wired); why not go POE and have more bandwidth available to the camera, along with power and network (video) all in one cable. Exactly... PoE is a great solution to several problems. It definitely beats going the wireless 802.11x route. ETA: I missed your question, sterling18... sorry about that. The problem with going wireless is several-fold. First, the cameras aren't really wireless. They may be wireless for DATA, but they still need a power cord. Second, they're susceptible to interference from other wireless devices (your microwave, your cordless phone, your neighbor's wifi. etc). Third, they commonly lose connection to the access point periodically, and have to re-associate, leading to drop-outs in your video. Fourth, you only have so much bandwidth with wireless (of whatever variation, A/B/G/N), and even segmenting it with multiple APs and channels may not be enough. Fifth, your camera streams can be intercepted by any old yokel with a PDA or laptop (or by your nosy neighbor) if you don't encrypt. This leads to the sixth problem, which is that many manufacturers use slightly different implementations of 802.11x encryption, leading to some devices being unable to talk to one another, or being only able to talk using weak (eg. crackable) encryption like WEP. Seventh, they're susceptible to hacking, or packet-injection attacks like a DEAUTH flood (which would completely disable your system). That said, wireless CAN work... EXPY uses wireless on a couple of setups he's running... but I'd restrict wireless for long-distance links where you have good LOS, or scenarios where it's simply cost-prohibitive to run cable. |

You can say that again... I can see why some people punt, and hire somebody for this stuff. For some of these setups you need to be part electrician, part network engineer, part photographer, part framer, part trim-carpenter... modern CCTV draws from so many other fields (particularly with network cameras) that it's a discipline of its own. |

Getting alot of flak about my choice to go with a wireless camera.
Understand that it is being mounted on a "PUBLIC UTILITY POLE" not owned by me. Since it is the DMARK point and the electric meter is on this pole I was allowed to tap into a designated breaker which powers motion activated flood lights. Permission to do this was conditional on not running any new exposed wiring or data cabling. First request was a flat out "NO, No Non-utility supplied hardware is allowed on the pole." I ask if they intended to come change the flood lights when they burned out. I'm not a fan of wireless myself for many of the reasons all ready stated. The rest of my network is all hardwired. I even jack in my laptops. I figured it would be better to exploit this vantage point than to pass on the chance. |

It just tends to be more problematic than wired ethernet. I'm working on helping out another poster here with a wireless setup, and he's ready to pull his hair out. Yours sounds like a decent arrangement... I've tried to mount even a simple motion detector unit on a public utility pole... and I was told to "get f*cked," so if you've managed to work out something with your utility guys, then that's worth doing. It sure beats sinking your own poles into the ground for cameras. |

Only reason this pole was allowed was the lines running to it are "only" 220VAC from the low side of the transformer, not sure what the line voltage is that feeds the transformer. It's not switching to night mode then... it's the camera, nothing to do with Luxriot. Check your day/night mode switching settings... and consider having it switch at a higher lux level. |

It doesn't show the TCM-7411 as a supported camera. I was unable to get mine set up, although I didn't spend too much time on it. I've been using Milestone since then. |

Lot's of great info on here.
I'll try to absorb it all soon. Until them, what is your take on the Logitech wireless security system. Logitech Alert™ 750e Outdoor Master System http://www.logitech.com/en-us/webcam-communications/video-security-systems/master-systems/devices/7252 It seems to be pretty good, but, I don't know anyone else who might have used it. So, what do you think of this? |

So, what do you think of this? About half of the eight review on their own website were decidedly negative... not a good sign. And those cameras aren't really "wireless." The pictures make them appear that way, but you still have to run power to them... so unless you have electrical outlets mounted up under your eaves (I've seen some houses that actually have that... usually for powering Christmas lights and such), you still have to run power cords. Also, consumer-grade wireless doesn't have the greatest reputation for reliability. Compared to a purpose-built CCTV system, those will probably suck. |

There is no option for a TCM-7411. I cannot set up up automatically. When I go to set it up manually, there is no option for TCM-7411. There is an ACM-7411 in the list. How are you setting your camera up? |

I was wondering if maybe a list might be made up of some of the favorite cameras and there average price points. - Might even do this as a 2nd thread just on camera reviews. This thread is a bit much to swallow for some, but I have prolly re-read the whole thing maybe 6 times since its beginning. Maybe a 3rd thread on all the software options (and some hints on the best vendors to buy licenses from).
My revised layout will utilize 8 cameras, with a few added much later. I have been shopping for the best (use) fit for each location for nearly 4 months. As I mentioned before - better to have the hardware up and running but not optimal rather than wait until all the ducks line up. So for me I'm getting my first 2 cams up and wired and online using the OEM provided software for now. I was going to try Zoneminder, and will continue to experiment with it while using the WORKING software. I can see that in the long run this security system will make the gun safes look like the cheap segment of the overall security plan. |

For those of you who have lots of money –– if you wanted to have your own bigtime server for your security system you could build one of these. 45 hard drives, (3) RAID 6 arrays, 4U rackmount...good stuff. Also, if you haven't seen it in GD yet –– this video is worth the time to watch. Synopsis: woman steal guy's snow shovel, he see this on his security cameras (news report said he sells them for a living), and as revenge he snow-blows her car.

I dont' recognize the software, but whatever software he's using, it's running on a Mac. Here's a view of his desktop... note the "X11 Applications Edit" across the top? That's a Mac desktop... looks like a powerbook.

Check out this link.
Professional crew that hit a warehouse in Tampa, Florida. They made off with 4.7 million dollars in military laptops destined for CENTCOM. The went up on the roof, cut a hole in it, rappelled down into the warehouse, and disabled the security system (this was really Ocean's Eleven stuff). They were in there for ten hours, and loaded two Semis with stolen computers. They also removed outside security cameras as an additional precaution. Fortunately, they missed two... and those cameras either had internal storage, or stored their video off-site... so they got pictures of a red Lincoln Navigator that came-and-went from the site. They then checked businesses around that area... and lookee here... the thieves took a lunch break:
That picture was grabbed from the camera at a nearby McDonalds. |

This thread has fantastic information, thanks for posting it! Now, unfortunately, I'm way too lazy to get all OCD and roll my own system. I'm the guy that goes into Sam's club and looks at something like this for $500 and goes hmmm... http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=prod1620303&navAction= Is there any turn key, off the shelf system that you'd recommend to someone that isn't so hardcore about it?
Thanks! |

Thanks! Honestly? I don't really like ANY of the off-the-shelf systems. |
