i run into alot of people who thinks its so crazy i go out ice fishing... when i ask why they are scared the ice will break post your ice fishing photos (GO)

I will not ice fish. I think of it kinda like I do sky diving. Do the parachutes open 99.999999% of the time? Yep. Still not doing it. You’ll never see a headline stating Dsteelman died falling thru the ice in a freak ice fishing accident . |

The reason to spend the money on the Kdrill, Eskimo Pistol Bit, or Nils with a high end brushless cordless drill is the weight savings. Propane augers are heavy. I have an Eskimo HC40 8" propane, and absolutely love it, but it's on the heavy side for 8" augers. Take that into consideration. The guys on the fringes of the ice belt, or those that consistently have to walk out to their spots will find out the weight savings for the cordless drill augers is beneficial. Also, you can get good sized fish up through 6" holes, so unless you're always pulling up huge lakers or pike, consider going with a 6" bit as you'll be cutting half the ice vs. 8" bit.
Ice has been very inconsistent here in Sodak this season. Northeastern SD has pretty good ice with many driving their trucks out now. Down here in the southeastern part of the state, we've had some really cold nights followed up by 3-4 really warm days which has caused a lot of spots to stay open. We also had a ton of waterfowl, mainly snow geese, stay on the lakes keeping holes open during our first deep freeze. |

Especially near cattails during daytime. Attached File Was on 12" of good clear ice on a bay of the missouri river. other side of the main channel below the dam was ice free allowing boats to put in on the ramp. Did some scrounging. I have an old Mora 8", and was actually able to break the auger loose from the handle. Ordered an 18v Milwaukee drill with 1200 in-lbs torque, which uses the batteries I already have, Cabelas has an adaptor that attaches to old style Mora threads (15mm x 1.5 mm pitch). So I guess we'll see. If we get any ice.
I have a 10" jiffy gas auger, it will be interesting to compare. Nice pics, hoping to get out soon. Hopefully auger parts and pieces will be here this week. |

Last week, 150 mi se from here. We're a bit short on cold this year, lots of open water and bad ice out there.

We take the 3/4ton diesel trucks with 20 foot ice castles behind us out on the ice...of course, there's usually 25-40 inches of ice or more. I've been on ice thing enough that when see your buddy walking 100 feet away you can see the bow in the ice and water gushes up through the hole when you break through with the auger. I don't enjoy thin ice like that...but sometimes it happens. You take precautions, have a plan, and fish with a buddy. |

Seems instead of being minimalist ice fishing has gone high tech, with underwater cameras and flashers or finders and specialized transducers being the norm. |

Nope. it's too boring. I have far more fun racing iceboats.
I live on a bay that is first to freeze and first to thaw. I'm amazed every year when I see some fool out there a day or two after the initial freeze and the ice is less than an inch thick. or at the end of the season when a stubborn one is out at the edge of the ice chatting with a guy in a fishing boat that's pulled up to the edge of the ice. |

This is about 18 miles out on Lake of the Woods. Ice was roughly 36”.
