Hunting is different that fighting. Different priorities. Could you kill a deer with a 10.5 556, sure but all the advantages of that rifle are unnecessary for hunting. The ability to carry a large ammo loadout, large magazine capacity, easier CQB, etc. In hunting, dropping the kill quickly is the priority, so accuracy and lethality. So larger a larger round, higher velocity, accuracy. |

I have used a 10.5" suppressed AR pistol the past 3-4 years on deer. Have not lost a single one, but I mostly attribute that to good projectiles. All were shot with 77gr TMK handloads (max charge 8208XBR, CCI450 primer, LC case, seated to 2.255") between 45 and 185 yards. Terminal performance is excellent with this bullet, but I view it as an expert's setup. Shot placement needs to be good ad ranges need to be shorter. I'd absolutely use something larger if it's an option, and will be doing so myself in the future as laws have changed where I hunt to allow rifles rather than shotguns and pistols only. Bottom line: it will work if you do everything right, but there isn't any room for error. |
