I usually run a basic 3-9x scope for deer season, but this year I tried an LPVO (1-6x) on my .308 to see if the flexibility would help for both mid-range and closer shots through brush. Been testing one from Gunnr—got curious after a friend mentioned it. After a few uses: the glass works well in dawn/dusk light, turret tracking is fair, zero drift is a bit inaccurate, or maybe I'm just not going about it the right way. Has anyone else tried an LPVO for field use vs. a traditional hunting scope? Would love to hear everyone's thoughts. I have no affiliation with them, just want to try a setup that doesn't break the bank. |
| I've got LPVOs on a couple hunting rifles. They're nice and lightweight but low light performance will never been as good as a high end hunting scope. If you're day time hunting slap it on there. If you're hunting deer in dawn and dusk and in the woods, I'd go with a traditional scope. |

I hunt mostly from a blind. Dawn and dusk, if you can’t see, you can’t shoot. Get the best binoculars and scope you can afford with the biggest objective. Makes a huge difference. 50mm on scope and 56mm on binoculars. Many times I’ve spotted deer that I couldn’t see with the naked eye. |

I don't hunt anymore but I used a Burris MTAC 1x4 with illuminated, AR ballistic reticle for about ten years. I still have it, but switched to a Meprolight M22 red dot ( triangle ). That ten years, I didn't have glasses and couldn't afford contacts, so I was dang near blind. I have horrible vision, so I needed something that was fast and that I could identify targets with. I got glasses last year, so I went back to the Meprolight optic. The Burris mentioned earlier in the thread is really nice and probably a great fit for what you're wanting to do, but their RT 1x6 is great as well, and would fit your needs better. If you like to use the illuminated reticle during the day, as I do, it is daytime bright. The other thing I like, is there's an off setting in between each power setting on the illumination dial. Every other scope out there is basically 0-10 , with no in between settings. It's off, one, two, three four, five etc. To turn it off, you have to go all the around back to zero. With the Burris, there's an off setting in between each brightness setting, so, it's off, one, off, two, off, three etc. The thing I like about that, is that you can find the setting that you like, shoot , and when you're done, turn the dial one click either direction and it's off. The majority of people find a setting they like, and return to that setting for 90% of their shooting, so you're already there. No need to go all the way around and back every time. The glass is much better than the price would let on. The MTAC used the XTR II glass type, which is a higher quality glass than you'd expect, but it helped lower costs of both scopes to use the same glass, same coatings and everything, and allowed a much higher quality than expected in the MTAC line. From what I understand, the RT-6 uses the same glass and coatings, but upgraded from the MTAC line. I shot the square, or the box, depending on what you call it, with the MTAC and it shot square. I did it three times and the shots on each corner of the target grouped well, so it was consistent. I use a large cardboard box at 100 yards for that test. 100 yards is what I have here where I can shoot from my house into the woods. We had close to 500 yards but the trees grew back a few years ago. Anyway, look at the RT-6. It may be what fits your needs. |

I use lpvo's almost exclusively on my hunting rifles out to 400yds on 308/45-70/6.5. 1-4 to 1-6's. Paired with a good set of binos and set to a 200yd zero, it's the handiest combo I've ever used. I can dial it back to 1 for fast shots on pigs, or dial it up and hold over for bigger animals and longer shots. eta: I agree with the above posts, use your binos for spotting and scope for aiming. |

Between ARs and a few Bolt guns I have several. I did not even know what the LPVO acronym stood for or that I had them till I just googled it. I used them for a small 3 gun shooting Comp we do here where for the rifle portion, you have to put 3 rounds on 2 targets at 75 yards, then 3 rounds on 2 targets at 100. I also use them for Coyote hunting once or twice a year and I have one on my HD rifle that also has Offset Irons. |

Attached File My 300BO ranger riding gun for the daytime. 1-10 sig LPVO. I don’t hate it but it’s not my favorite. Good for closer range stuff like hogs and dillos. I also have a 6.5G setup like this that I prefer although it is a little louder. Scope is a 2.5-8 x36. Attached File |

All of my African bolt guns have the same Luepold 1.75-6 scope on them. 416, 375, 9.3x74R, and 9.3x62. In Africa unless you are hunting at night for Leopard or a few other game light gathering is a non issue. I have a throw lever on all of them so I can leave them on the lowest setting while we are tracking or during a stalk and turn them up if there is time while we are setting up the sticks or if I know there is a longer shot to be taken. Which in Africa is 250 yards. Anythig. Longer than that at say a Vhall Reedbuck and you wo t be using a heavy rifle and will have something f more appropriate with a larger scope. In the states I have a few rifles set up with LVPO’s. O w if my 45/70’s has an older Luepold 1.5-5 and my 99 in 358 W has a 2-8 on it and both are wonderful for their niche. |
I put various LPVO's on my sons hunting rifle, I've found the large field of view and low magnification make it easier for kids to find target animals in the scope. He has been very successful over the last decade hunting with it.

| I use 1-6x30 scopes on my hunting rifles. Over the years, I've used a lot of different scopes with higher magnification and I always came back to the 1-6x30. My farthest kill with one is 344 yards, my closest is around 20. With good glass and an illuminated reticle, you can hunt the entire day. |
