The only things that rattle on my rifle are the front sling mount, which is easily fixed with some tape, and the piston which is only if you tilt it front and back. P.S. With an M1A, start and stop your search for mags with Checkmate. Fantastic mags, battle proven, inexpensive, plenty of cartridge OAL room. The SR25 mags the SFAR takes are a much muddier world with no best answer. I'm liking the Duramags. The P mags are ridiculously short, and they are pretty loose fit. Some of the high end options are over $110 each! |

I had an M1A for hunting, laser range finder scope, the works. It was a heavy bitch. If you just drive out to your stand, get in it and sit all day, it is a fine rifle. If you are walking around, it gets heavier and heavier and heavier… But the answer is always, get both! I don’t know why, but the M1A is my grail gun. I had one and sold it, and recently got another… I just love that gun. I had a M1A Loaded and it was extremely accurate out of the box. Well under 1 MOA. I don’t know what my new rifle will be, since it seems I will probably never get a Basset mount for it unless I find one online somewhere… |

I've used both hunting, my M1A at the time was national match with a heavy barrel and I would not want to use that particular model again. If i was buying an M1A to hunt with it would be a scout/squad or the standard barrel version with a polymer stock. My L/ handed Ruger scout rifle is a great lightweight hunting rifle. |

I don't enjoy shooting or carrying an M1A with a scope. It feels good and carries well with iron sights. A ghost ring sight can help in low light, I usually see most animals at the edges of shooting hours. You can get a similar effect by moving your head closer to the sight, it is uncomfortable and slower but might help. I just picked up a Burris Fast Fire 3 and a mount to replace the rear sight. It is easier to see with cataracts but the dot is a constellation of dots due to the cataracts. I'm hoping it is good for low light and quick target acquisition. The flash suppressor makes the rifle kind of long, I picked up a spare flash suppressor and milled it to the base of the slots. It was easier to carry after that but the rifle lost a lot of character so I put the original flash suppressor back on. It is a little heavy but in the WMAs that I hunt I don't tend to walk more than a couple of miles in a day. Get one, they are cool, if your eyes are good they are fine for medium range without a scope. |
