The next two weeks we put the standing seam roof on, started the pocket doors and the slider.

Sealed up everything and installed the soffits

Exterior is pretty much ready for winter

We celebrated shooting myself with a nail gun with a smoked brisket, slaw and baked beans.

Starting shower and floor tile for the next week.  Built a bed, finished up plumbing and started the ass whipping project of moisture barrier in crawl space.

Interesting thread, but you might want to try resizing those pics for uploading.   They must be HUGE; they take forever to load.   1200 pixels wide is more than enough for anything on a computer.   1000 pixels wide is about right for full screen on arfcom, 800 gets the job done.

Also, check out this thread for Alaska cabin building:

 SanchoCobb....
You prefer to leave the ceiling the way it is?  Any advantages, besides extra saving money of covering it up?

Looking great!

I assume the roof foam is closed cell? How thick is it? Is it enough for your super cold climate?

We have a Rinnai propane “on demand” water heater works great…

We are about 300 miles from that volcano, hopefully we are safe…

Edited to add our well water comes out at 36 degrees.

We paid for 4 inches of closed cell foam, we got around 5-6 in most places.  He quoted efficiency numbers R and U values and Delta T calculations and diminishing returns and assured us it was enough.

There are no hot spots on roof and no condensation so hopefully all good…

First half of November we spent trimming and little tedious projects

Got our first real taste of cold just before thanksgiving

I’ve been handling snow with a 4-wheeler, pretty sucky when it’s cold and windy.  I won’t do another winter like that.

Not as much as you’d think.  During that week long spell we probably burned 12 logs a day.  Compared to now, I build one fire in evening and another one the next evening as long as sun is out.

It is a smaller house but more importantly, it's clearly very well insulated.

Very interesting seeing the differences between building in Alaska vs the lower 48.

Do you have another heat source for the house besides the stove?

I remember watching something about remote Alaskan living and it was mentioned they had a second well insulated building on the property but not very close to the house….within walking distance. The reason was, if the house became unlivable (fire maybe?) in the super cold climate you needed to have a backup place to go to survive. Have you thought of something like that? Would you even consider it a necessity?

Since you have propane, I might have missed it but what size tank do you have? With the super cold climate have you had to put a heat blanket on the tank to keep the propane flowing on those incredibly cold days?

Thanks for bringing us along for the ride!

We have a 30k btu infrared propane heater we could setup if needed.  We would have to bring a tank inside to use it.  Currently we have 2-100lb tanks, I’ll get at least a 250 this summer.  Propane quits vaporizing at -44f, no heat blankets yet…. We went shower-less a few days…. We do cook on and in the wood stove more often than not.  Baked taters and other veggies.

Our only other shelter if shtf is a 20 foot toy hauler we could bring to life with some electric heaters.  Damn that would be rough.

I also have a 4750 dual fuel generator.  Garage/shop build coming soon which will be a nice back up.  I’ll probably do an oil heat Toyo stove and maybe in floor heat…

Thanks fer checking in…

Exhaust-sickle — this is the amount of moisture from two back to back showers and a day of cooking.
