As a teen in southern OK in the 60’s, I was invited to hunt coyotes that were demolishing a farmers watermelon patch. Farmer had a 40 acre field of melons. Coyotes would know exactly when they were ripe (by smell I’m sure). At night they’d eat a hole in the side of the melon, eat the heart of the melon, leave the rest and go to the next one. All I had was a .22, a rabbit squeal on a cassette tape and a spotlight. I think I got two after a week of calling at night. Back then we had to notify the game warden in advance where we were going to be, so he’d know we weren’t spotlighting deer. He had our names and the farmers name and location He probably verified with the farmer that we were legit. NV woulda been a game changer, even with a .22 !! |
