Our state game and fish commission is voting tomorrow to change the Muzzle loader season to “Alternative Weapons” season. It was proposed a couple of months ago for public input and generally any “proposals” are already a done deal. Straight wall, no semi autos. I already have a 450 AR platform upper so am in good shape with ammo. Looking at either the Ruger American G2 bolt gun or a CVA break open single shot. I mz hunt now with a CVA V2LR and am familiar with that platform as well as the bolt gun. Just wondering about the single shot mainly, for those that have them, or both, is the Cva accurate? Long shots for me will be 100 yards, mostly well under 50. The bolt gun is a couple hundred dollars more than the Cva but that’s of no worry to get what I need. Thoughts?? |

My son and I use .350 Legend rifles in southern lower Michigan. He shoots a CVA single shot, and I shoot a Winchester XPR. Our experience has been that his CVA is as accurate if not slightly better than my Winchester, with both grouping between 1 and 1.5 inches at 100 yards with the right ammo. His prefers the Winchester XP 150 grain, and mine prefers the Winchester 160 grain power max bonded. I briefly had a Ruger American in .450, but I had feeding issues with the magazines. It was not uncommon when they first chambered the American in .450. From what I've read Ruger has addressed the issue. I was so impressed with the CVA I considered picking one up in .243 before I lucked into a Model 70 varmint for a price I couldn't pass up. I may still pick up the .243 because it's so dang cheap and good, and light to boot. |
| I have two VCA Cascades and one Mosseberg bolt in 350L. The Cascades shoot well and have a nice trigger, but last couple times I tried finding extra mags I came up empty. Just another question to ask if something like that is important to you. I wouldn't be looking for "light" bolt guns in 450BM. Damn thing kicks enough in my AR! |

To me the 450 bolt guns just don't carry that well. I think the barrel is just to large. I prefer the single shot in 450bm or AR platform. I have a cva cascade in 350L that I'm really happy with, if getting a bolt gun id consider one of those for sure. I much prefer a flush fitting mag on a hunting rifle and that is my only complaint on the rugers. |

I just read through the new regulations, and I have to say those are some of the most bizarre reasonings I have ever heard. You are totally free and clear to shoot a 360 buckhammer rifle, but shotgun slugs are not allowed at all? And their reasoning is it isn't a metallic cartridge because only some of it is metal? Are they not aware you can get full-brass shotgun cartridges? Why would that even be a factor? Is buckshot still allowed? Really, really bizzare. I also notice they state very clearly, you can use a semi-auto if you shut the gas off and run it as a bolt action. There's nothing stopping you from using your current 450 upper if you shut the gas off. That's what I would do. Actually I would just shoot the muzzleloader, but that's me. |

Every state has strange regulations, but that is near the strangest. I can't even imagine what their reasoning would be. Thats the only state I've ever heard of that wont let you use shotgun slugs for deer, outside of some special zones that are buckshot only for safety. |

I actually like the current CVA offerings as much as my 30-30 contender. Attached File Granted, the 30-30 has an SSK barrel that shoots MOA at 100, and the CVA 45/70 shoots 1.5-2" groups. |
