John although 60 years old runs into a 27 year old nurse hottie who of course WANTS HIM (cause you know most survival fiction is really MALE FANTASY writing). Makala (sp and don't care) was a young hottie, but she wasn't as smoking as that cigarette John had in his mouth. It was like a GD Norman Rockwell painting- with smoking. Makala came to him "John, do you want me John?" John said, "not as much as I want this cigarette, damn this is good." It was all like a GD Norman Rockwell painting which oddly enough appeared like a Phillip Marlboro cigarette ad. Those cannibal looters that always seem to show themselves in survival fiction show up, but killing them wasn't as good as puffing on that cigarette, it was like a Norman Rockwell painting, with cannibal looters and cigarettes...... If you missed that majorly obsessively reoccurring theme reading it, get the audio CD and you will see what I mean. 2nd book wasn't much better, although I've only listened to it once. Not the greatest SHTF books but not the worst by far. I thought the nurse lady was a redhead in her mid to late 40's? Now that I know the age difference Ewwwwwwwwww. |

I think when I was listening a cigarette commercial interrupted the part where he described her age??? She was 40 cartons old with cellophane wrapping with gold fringe.... LOL I'm guessing he got a pallet of cigarettes from Phillip Marlboro for his work? |

The thing that strikes me about survival fiction is that the communities they set up typically follow a socialist order. |

For some reason I remember him being in the first gulf war as a high ranking officer. Which would probably put him at mid-late 50's. |

Forstchen is a good author. The books get too interrupted by speeches. I was not expecting Patriots or a Death Lands novel with a ton of violence. It was a nice change of pace from the typical survivalist novel in that aspect. More action couldn't hurt though.
There are some really interesting concepts in both books that I would have loved some more pages on rather than another speech by John. At the risk of sounding unAmerican or unpatriotic, I think people would be much less concerned with the state of the union than they will be their immediate families. Especially after many of their loved ones had just starved to death. Just my opinion. I really enjoyed a lot of the first book. Food and water were the most important items. Common medicine was a necessity. There are some extremely well thought out points made on prescriptions etc. All that said I will buy the third one when it comes out. Speeches and all I would like to know how the story ends. |

I've written off the serial umpteen-book survival series; the books are never standalone-worthy and I get tired of the poor writing. CAN'T WAIT for Soldier's Son to be released(by DCBourone) eventually. I'm really hoping he beats the streak of obvious proofreading failures. His writing is top shelf so we'll see! |
| Listening to the 2nd now. I really liked the first one but I agree, too many speeches in the 2nd. Also, the guy reading completely mixes up accents several times on certain characters, sounding like a guy from Boston in one chapter, then a redneck in the next. He also uses a southern accent on John throughout the whole book when he is from the north. I know that seems frivolous but it gets very annoying. Will probably listen to the 3rd one day however. |
